i am about to embark on a DIY air intake setup and after doing some reading here and elsewhere , i've seen a few people suggesting to just clamp a cone filter directly on to the TB.
if this is a legit option then why do people bother with the tubing ? where do you put the IAT sensor ?
 


I did. maybe i'm just searching the wrong words or the wrong forum. i found info on how to make them and what not, but i didn't find a discussion on the merits of just clamping directly to the throttle body.
 
You can... And maybe it's better not to, that you have a short run of tubing at least to smooth airflow before sensors...

i was hoping to find a discussion about it , but so far i've only seen a few people suggest to other to just clamp it straight to the throttle body , but i've yet to see a person say that's what they run.

even in this recent thread a member suggests to the newb to clamp it on direct if it's a supercharger

i've read the debates about the cold air vs more air in a forced air induction system.

From what I remember reading long ago (don't remember where).. there isn't a big difference in temp drop and power gains using a "shorty intake " vs the fenderwell type. At idle the fenderwell intake will probably give you a few degrees cooler but once the air's flowing at speed, there aren't big gains to make a noticeable difference in power. However the fenderwall intakes do look purty!
 


Here's mine, and what I suggest.

Buy a foot of ZZP tubing, and buy a Spectre filter from AutoZone. Add a few clamps, then drill a small hole where ever it tickles your fancy in the intake tubing. Done.

I just shoved my filter in the little area where a filter would go if it was a fender well, just not totally in the fender.



 
That and they have a giant heat pump sitting on top of them that the air flows through before it goes into the engine.
 
There's more to an air intake than just function. Some people prefer the look of a cai or fwi even if there are no performance gains. Just something else to consider.

I was just thinking the same thing. A nice looking Cold Air Intake set-up with a surrounding box looks way better than huge space-taking stock air box. Free up a ton of room if removed.
 
I don't think you would "free up room" by removing the stock air box and adding a CAI with a box. Might even take up more space.
 
Well in some cases it could save room. If you remove the box around the C.A.I., it frees up the most room, but the box around it makes it look nice.
 
I bought a GTP with a cone clamped on and the IAT sensor zip-tied underneath the clamp. Did not create any issues that I found but I didn't leave it that way long. Had an extra airbox with a K&N in it so I installed that. Because to me, the idle hiss is unwanted. I did want to hear the blower whine though, so I made a modification to the existing stock air box since it is not restrictive. This option is visually the most tasteful in my opinion, because you can't see any mod but you sure hear it. Plus you keep the protected box around the computer. If its just whine you want, read this just in case its of interest- the "whine box" mod

I agree the air box mod is a good option. Little more flow, more sc whine and the PCM is still protected. It also doesn't have quite as much of the EGR grinding/hissing noise during warm-up as a cone provides. I added the slots to the side of the nox and removed some of the internal baffles to eliminate restriction.
 
stay away from bends as much as possible. 90 are the worse. If you have a stock TB it will sound like ur sucking out of an empty cup w a straw. Esp. on startup. N* cures that though :) larger the cone THE BETTER

Seriously? That response sounds like the ricey-est thing I've ever heard. Function will always be the best over looks.

If you care about looks more than function, you have some serious insecurities.

if you want to blow money on a cai or a fwi, go for it.

Tell that to anyone who has bought roof rails, different wheels, LED's, etc...
You are entitled to your opinion, but it isn't gospel for everyone.
Calm down. people can spend money on their cars however they want.
