Air Box Delete and take out

On a Stock 98 GT, Would I b able to take the Air Box out and run just the air tube with K&N Air Filter in it till I get better tube. Is it safe to take the air box out because I heard the PCM is under the box and will get damaged. Will the PCM get damaged or no.

No damage will occur to the PCM. Go ahead and read the safely modding your 3800 thread. It'll cover a lot of basics for you.

the pcm actually sits in the airbox. but some get the 00 blazer pcm tray, some zip tie it, and others just let it free float. txslow6 actually has his in a very unique way

I am also getting ready to start the process of removing my air box for one of the custom made cold air intakes like in the how to write-up on the custom intake and pcm mount. I have a 2004 GP GT1, and I was wondering if anybody could explain how to get the IAT sensor into the into the 4" 45 degree mandrel a little better (since this is where the write up got a little fuzzy for me) or if you have a better way to install the IAT sensor please let me know.

I just installed this 3.5" PIPE PONTIAC GRAND PRIX SE GT GTP 3.8 3.8L V6 AIR INTAKE 97-2002 2003 BLUE | eBay on my 1998 GT. Not bad for $27

Ignore the dirty engine bay :th_lipssealed1: Just got the car from my uncle, And she needs alittle work.

LOL, I have the same Hot Air intake as those 2 post above, yup $27 w/free shipping and 3.5inch pipe works just fine. Also the cone filter holds down my pcm from moving.

I yelled about shipping and gave them a nuetral rating, they sent credited
me 10$ and asked if I would change the rating so 17$ for me!

cut a slit in the rubber connector and insert the iat

poof it's just a cone now

I had a spare specter filter I did that to, but I like having the polished tube with grommet made for the IAT. Either way I think is good. Love hearing that SC or if N/A moar roar.

I opted to put my PCM in the bumper:

However, I have run the PCM in the engine bag unbolted before. And other times I have run the PCM with zipties. It will be fine which ever route you go.

Please note this is my first time doing this. So, I removed my air box this weekend and installed a open cone cai filter on the end of the hose that has the sensor thats connected to the flex tube. After looking at pics of other forum member's CAI I began to question why did people remove the flex tube thru airbox. I was trying to find a 3.5" diameter metal pipe locally, but all the auto part store here only had 3" diameter mandrels (which were made of some type of plastic), so I opted to just get a long open cone air filter and attach it to the piece that connected to the air box. Does connecting a mandrel to the throttle body with a rubber coupler provide better performance... How did you all get this sensor (circled below) to seperate from the hose and fit into that circular hole on the mandrel?

That is exactly what I did ! check out my post and pics on the thread custom intake and pcm , I cut the stock box in half by the part where is glued together zip-tied it back into the body and laid the pcm on top l. I zip tied the cone to the fender-well (there is many areas you could ziptie to make sure it doesn't move like crazy)

To answer the first part of your question i have heard that it helps a little to get rid of the flex tube because the ridges will cause the air to not flow as good as a smooth inside.

As for the answer to how to get the sensor out I cant help you there. I have yet to do this myself but will be doing it shortly.
