Hi im thinking about getting an aftermarket alarm system put in with remote start, i was looking at prestige and viper. I just wasn't sure if either one will cause problems...i have a 2004 GP comp g and it has the factory alarm but the horn on it is kinda crapping out so that's the reason i want to get a new one, not sure if that'll interfere with anything. Any info would be great or input from personal preference on systems. Thanks.
 


I have a Viper 5901 sitting in my closet. Its a nice unit, but it drains your battery quick if your car is not a daily driver. Hence, why mine is sitting in my closet. But I'd still recommend it.
 
I thought it did have a battery saver function or soemthing. I can go a couple days without driving and it is fine. The other nice feature is that the remote is rechargable, usually get about 2 weeks out of it then just plug it in.
 
A couple of days is no problem. After I installed it, my car sat for 11 days. My battery was dead at that point.(Battery was 1 year old) My other remote start didnt have the alarm function and could sit for at least a month and would still start. So I removed it and reinstalled my other remote start. And it does have a battery saver option, but that just means that when the battery drops below a certain voltage, the car starts. My car would start and run for 15 minutes and shut off. Then 5 minutes later it would start back up and run for 15 minutes. I went through 1/2 tank of gas in a day, and I never even drove the car.
 
Does anyone have any experiences with the Prestige brand? there's a shop near me that has a sale going on for them.
 


I have the Viper 5901 as well and haven't run into the battery drain issues either. It's sat for a good week or more.
 
I recently installed a Code Alarm CA6551 alarm w/ remote start. Works awesome. You will need the PATS module to bypass the factory passkey. I drive daily so the battery isn't an issue.

Now, my old Bronco, which sat for weeks if not months, had a Viper alarm and would usually kill the battery after a few months if I forgot to start her up.

Prestige is owned by Audiovox, who also owns Code Alarm. Prestige is good product. I used to sell it many years ago, and two friends ran the install shop, which did tons of dealer installs with Prestige product. I had one of their alarms in my T-Bird and had no issue's.
 
One plus the viper 5901 system has is a feature called smart start can be enabled. This will start the car when the battery voltage drops below a threshold or if the cars internal temp gets too hot or cold. The bad thing is to change these thresholds you need to go to a dealer or buy a device called bitwriter. I would use this feature primarily for the battery concerns. However the default high temp threshold is 100 degrees which is to low unless you want your car running whenever your not in it during the summer. This would explain the post about using a half a tank of gas without driving.
 


IF you get the 5901 I would recommend the external shock sensor. It is more sensitive then the on board on in the computer.

No, its because I maybe drive my car 2 times a month. I had the bitwriter set up for smart start when battery level is 12v. Because at 12v the battery is down to 25% charge. I also turned the smart start low temp and high temp off.
