Adjustment procedure for shifter cable?

While replacing a tranny I broke the end of my shifter cable at the bracket on top of the transmission. I've ordered a cable from a salvage yard, but the Haynes manual I have mentions an adjustment procedure. The same manual also says not to separate the two halves of the cable.

Haynes aside, if there's a way to only replace the half of the cable from the firewall to the tranny, and avoid removing the console etc. inside the car, I'm all for it.

I tried to find a thread on adjusting the cable, without success. So, two questions:

1) Procedure for adjusting the cable?
2) Can I only replace the lower half of the cable?

thanks in advance.

Take the clip out of it so it is relaxed, then put the shifter in the car in D range. Now reach down to the trans and put the lever into D range and then put the clip back in the cable. Move the shifter through the gears and make sure things align, also make sure the shifter does not feel like there is any or minimal slop in it. Sometimes it takes some fine tuning but is needed.
