AC issue

Having an ac issue. Low reads 45psi, high reads 100psi, changed compressor, dryer, hi\low ports, did not do the orifice, seems to be a pain so I figured I could get away with not changing it, or the manifold hose going to the compressor, car has 190,000, the ac stopped working about 100,000 miles ago, never really used it, but now I would like to have working ac. I know my gauges work I just did a complete ac system, compressor, hoses, orifice on my 95 F250. The system also only had 100psi before the compressor change. This was one reason I changed it.

Does it work at all?
Does it work ok when you are on the freeway but not in traffic?
What was your resting pressure (equalized)?
What car do you have?

Sorry, 02 Grand Prix 3.1. The compressor runs but does not get cold, no change on the highway, didnt check the equal pressure, I can check that tomorrow. I was just curious there might be a blockage or bad orifice not letting the compressor build pressure.

If the orifice tube was blocked the high side pressure would be higher than a giraffes ass. It sounds more to me like its a variable displacement pump stuck on the low. I'm not sure if the compressor used on your GP is variable displacement. But does it even get slightly cool at night or when you are on the freeway? Is it blowing from the correct vents? Does the temp seem to be quite warm?

I figured that with the blocked orifice, but with the variable displacement compressor, I was not sure if the blockage would lower the pressure, I do feel just a little coolness, but not much more than the outside temperature. I do alot of Ford systems with the single displacement compressors, and as I said earlier I just did my Ford truck with no issues, put everything in, charged it, ice cold. This is the first time I am working with a variable displacement compressor, and am trying to learn and diagnose why the compressor is running and not getting cold. I am still trying to find if the compressor manifold has anything to do with it.

Well I am not sure if it is variable or not, but my Park Ave is and it has the same pressures. There is a valve on the back of the compressor that controls it and it's stuck on low so in traffic it warms up quite a bit, to the point where the temp coming out of the vents is 80* on a 95* day. When I get the car up to about 45 or so it cools down, and as long as your cruising over 45 it will stay in the low 40's* out of the vent. I am wondering if you might have 2 probems one the compressor and the blend door is stuck. Can you select hot and go back to cold and see if it changes temp?

Found the issue. Changed orifice, very little change, new low side and high side ports were bad, and my gauges were bad, high side, gauge would not read unless I pushed down on the adapter, the low side would only let a trickle of freon in, and the needle barely moved. New ports and different gauges, high now reads around 225, and the low 40, and blows cold air.

Well cool, I was a little perplexed as to how you had 45 and 100 and no cold air at all. Glad you found it.

Jeff

That is true, I started checking mine once a year when my equipment at the shop goes in for calibration. So every February I check the gauge set and the compression gauge and fuel pressure gauge. The compression tester got a little extra check this year.
