ABS Unit and brake bleeding

Your pedal is hard & stays hard when car is off because you have no power brakes= zero vacuum. When you start the car, engine vacuum enters brake booster= pedal to floor. Also old fluid sux, brake fluid naturally attracts and absorbs moisture = water in fluid that will become hot enough to boil it= steam/vapor= spongy pedal. Start from the top like scottydoggs said with fresh fluid.
