abs light on, trac ctrl light off, what does this mean?

On and off now for about 2 weeks my abs light has been on, the traction control light off and the anti-lock brakes seem to kick in every once in awhile for a few seconds for no good reason.

Is this a bad sensor problem, bad bearing/wheel problem or something else?

any help would be appreciated.

this is on a 2001 grand prix gtp that is in great condition and has been properly maintained over the years.

I had the exact same symptoms. It turned out to be a wire to a wheel speed sensor was shorting out. had to carefully pull it apart and resolder it and insulate it.

Sounds like the harness/wiring to the ABS sensor is going bad. The wires often corrode pretty far up the connection and break. I had to replace the harness section from the sensor to the main loom connection up on the subframe. Not sure if the 01's have it separate or not. I know in later years that seemed to disappear.

Check your ABS wire connections and the harness. I had the same issue. Looked, and the connection to the front passenger hub was hanging down. Reseated the connection and attached it properly to the hub, and haven't had the issue since.

Short version - check the wires.

yes to all of the above. I had this issue on my 03 too. replaced the harness and all was well.

Where exactly on the car should i be looking for the wire connections and harness?

Jack up the car and pull off one of the front wheels and check right where the wire connects to the hub. You will be able to see it. Mine gave me the same issue 2years ago. I just said f**k it and pulled the abs fuse after I ran a stop sign because the abs randomly came on. Pulled into the next parking lot to take it out and still to this day haven't felt like fixing it. Always hated ABS anyways.
