"abs" and "trac off" lights staying on?

Hello, my trac and abs lights were going on and I was getting the crunching feeling when braking at slow speeds (under 15 mph) like the abs brakes were engaging. I replace a front hub assembly and all was fine.

Kinda new around here but I have been around on the other boards for a while,
Anyway, I had a problem last year with my ABS and Trac lights lighting and not going out till I shut off the car.
The dealer scanned the car and the ABS module was bad.....new dealer part was between $1,200.00 and $1,500.00. the same part from morads was $175.00 shipped.
The ABS module has two parts, the pump and the computer...I'm sure there is a more technical name for these parts but a computer and pump but, it is what it is.
The computer of the module was bad once I changed the part everything was good.
It's hard to tell what the problem is without codes....I think pepboys will scan it for free.
I would get it scanned so you don't have to replace something that isn't bad.

dstout, you're absolutely correct, it's much easier to pinpoint if you can scan, but unfortunately, most scanners won't scan abs codes, including the scanners the parts places would use. You have to have something like a Tech II, Snap-On, or HP Tuners.
 
To the guy who replaced the front hubs try doing the rears. To the original poster, definitely wheel bearing/hub assembly. The hub going bad will cause lots of issues, including your power steering acting up, your ABS turning off, traction control turning off...and more. They are actually pretty easy to change out. Take off the wheel, axel nut, 2 caliper bolts, 3 bolts for assemble and voila, reassemble.

ya i have never changed the rears lol but the front was very easy to do

for some reason I never caught the fact that my front passenger wire from the hub to the sensor was completely severed. I replaced both front hubs (paid $100 shipped for both!) and all my lights are back off. Easy job!
 
The sensors are not removable (with out a big hammer) and will be changed with the bearings. I have changed my front hubs and my EBCM and I still have the TCS off light on (ABS went out when I changed the ECBM) I want to know how to test the rear WSS with a voltmeter. I hear it is possible but I can't find the specifics.
 


I had a similar problem since a few months, I changed a hub and it started again one month later but it was really rare, I did a flush, we went to vegas, like 600miles in the trafic and no problems. and since a few days it is just crazy, the abs start crunching right away when I start driving, even when I'm not braking. I did a new flush, change the pads, my friend told me maybe I need to change the ABS pump, I will check the connections tomorrow, I hope it is not too bad, I do not have one penny for that and I need my car.
The brake fluid was very dark, and I know I need to change a tie rod, maybe this is the second hub too.
If I disconnect the sensors one by one and drive the car to see if this is a sensor pronblem do you think it will work or not,
Is that possible to just disconnect the ABS, the time for me to find some financial solutions, this crunching noise and sensation make me totally crazy !!

OK, a "technician" saw the car and said, "...mmmm you need to change ABS module and Computer....mmmmm..." :th_thumb-down:

So I made some research on the net, and I found something about the wiring between the hub and the car and a possible bad connection at the plug, I removed everything, check the wires, cleaned the connection, and now it is back to normal,:th_thumb-up:, well for the moment...

I think a lot of the problems with lights like this is the connections. Whenever I get a light on, I always check all my connections, make sure they are clean, and use some dielectric grease in them. Usually works for awhile.
 
i dont have the crunching feeling that you guys are talking about but my Trac control and ABS lights are both on. As ive read, i should check the connections to the sensors? how do i do this?
 


two solutions, you jack the car, you remove the wheels one by one and you'll see a wire behind each hub, this is the wires for the sensors. or you have a gooooood friend with a lift :cool: and it will be much more easier to just lift the car and check them :th_thumb-up:
 
mine are constantly on and thats because i know there bad and when u had the engine rebuilt i had the car parked and the emergence brake on for like 6 months straight so im 99% sure its the hubs. seeings how the front is the important ones check the front ones first before dealing with the back
 
I recently had this happen (ABS/TCS lights come on, steering stiff). I checked the sensors/wiring at the hubs, all seemed good. Decided to check the big connector on ABS module. I removed, cleaned, and reseated the connector, and haven't had a problem since. It is a big connector, and after 13 years of pretty extreme conditions not surprising it needs a bit of love. Worth trying before anyone sends off the module for refurb, or even spend $100 on a scan.

My ABS and Trac Off lights come on occasionally then eventually go off. No other symptoms at this point. I was under the car checking for loose wires and noticed that the passenger side CV boot failed and there is quite a bit of grease there. That particular hub had been changed due to being noisy a couple of years ago.

i bought an Innova 3150b scanner that is supposed to read ABS. But the codes it gives me in the ABS setting are like 16, 22, and 45. When I look them up they appear to be codes that don't pertain to the ABS system. I've called Innova and they are supposed to call me back Monday.

I know I have to replace the axle, do you think that the grease could cause the speed sensor to have failed? Any other ideas?
