ABS and Trac Control off lights

just bought a 98 gtp and when i step on the gas to spin the wheels it goes and starts spinning then the wheels stop spinning and car accelerates slowly unless release the gas pedal and press it again. is this because the ABS and trac control off lights are on? i thought it was only supposed to that when the trac control is on.

bad wheel speed sensor. needs new hub bearing assemblies in the front. abs and trac control wont work otherwise

Anytime you break traction with the traction control on it will bog the car down and pull power to help return traction.

your wheels speed sensors in one or both bearings is bad. this will cause the trac control to engage, and the abs to engage when its not supposed to. when mine went bad i nearly wrecked the car trying to fight the abs at 10 mph

Awsone thanks for the info, i knew onw of the sensors was bad but i was confused about why it said trac control off but acted like its on. What u said makes sense tho. Once i get around to fixing the sensor ill let you know how it is. Thanks again

you cant just fix the sensor. the whole wheel bearing/hub assembly needs replaced on the bad side. take it to a brake shop and they will tell you which one is bad. then go to autozone and buy a new hub assembly. get the Timken, which is more expensive, because the bearing is smoother, the sensor is MUCH BETTER quality, and its made in the USA. the chinese bearings will go bad within the year you purchase them if your not EXTREMELY careful around potholes.
one last thing, unplug your wheel speed sensors and the car will act normal. you will no longer have abs or trac control and the trac/abs lights will stay on. the brakes and gas pedal will function the old fashioned way, but at least you wont end up rearending some poor bloke because your ABS was keeping you from stopping.

if your abs light is on already the abs is NOT WORKING NOW, no need to unplug anything.

and the brake shop ain't going to scan your abs for free, its a $100 scan at best, unless you got a friend there. or you leave it there for them to fix it.

jack up your car and see if you have the any play in the wheel by trying to move the wheel from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock, if it has any movement, thats most likely your bad hub, and see if the wires are worn through or if the plug fell off the hub on all 4 wheels.

scottydoggs: my problem is that the trac control seems to be engaging all the time even when it says its off and the abs light is on.

L36pro: ya i know i have to replaced the hub to fix it

mine has the same problem right now, abs /trac off, and the traction control kicked on one time, check your hubs and wires or pay to have it scanned, if you have it scanned they will tell you exactly whats wrong with with it, could be another electrical part. but the hubs are the most likely source of the abs/trac off light.

your right, no need to unplug anything. tell the dude your rearend that, because you were certain that the abs would not give you problems. lol

no. it takes 2 seconds to unplug, your trac control will stop interfering with your driving and theres no risk of abs kicking in. but whatever, your risk.

sounds more like a tq management thing to me than a wheel speed sensor, but that's just me...stock pcm right?

unplug them and youll know for sure. scotty dogs is just arguing for the sake of it. how do you turn down such an easy diagnosis?

as far as i know its stock, just bought the car and it only had one owner with no noticeable mods. are you talking about torque converter vailskier3?

im going to unplug the sensors in the morning to settle this between l36pro and scottydoggs lol

lol i have no idea where generaly everyone is on this forum but im in ontario canada and right now its 12:15am and raining so ull have to wait till morning haha

it could even be the electronic braking/traction control module, but its like 700 bucks new. but thats why having it scanned tells you whats wrong, and its not raining here. lol
