About to make intake, 3" or 4" piping?

Hey guys, just gonna be a simple 45* bend to a 9" long k&n. I read a while back that for a S/Ced one you need 4". But currently I just have my large filter on the end of my MAF and it looks like the sensor is only 3" anyways. So even if I did go 4", there would be no point anyways? Just a bottleneck unless I pointlessly upgraded the sensor size somehow

Currently, essentially stock. Future mods I hope to be XP cam, headers, whatever pully from there. Maybe IC. But I'm assuming stock wouldn't care with 3" anyhow since the stock bend doesn't look too big either

3 inch street pipe is what you need. I used a 22.5 for a not so harsh bend 4 inch filter fits perfectly over the larger end of it then a rubber couper stretched over the TB.

Edit if your 04+ the 22.5 you might have clearance problems because of the MAF but iunno

Yeah I'm a comercial plumber so I have all this stuff at the shop anyways. Was going to use XFR pvc because it won't burn up like other "plastics". I also think it is a bit more heat resistant too, but I'm not sure and I'll be painting it anyways :P at the moment I have the filter going into the bottom half of the airbox (just took off the top portion) with some tin between the electronics and filter so it doesn't burn up. That's why it looked to me like more of a 45*

So has anyone heard of 3" being "too small"?

Stock size is near 3in and you'd never outflow that stock or even when modded on just about any car.

Don't over oil that K&N filter either, it can kill the MAF sensor, I prefer dry flow filters myself.
 
Yeah I've been through that before. This ones a brand new filter though so hopefully from factory they aren't overdone. So from stock to that cone would you have noticed any change? I know I used a 3" filter first on the end of my maf, but it was a really short one off my old 3.4l Grand am so it restricted things way too much. This beast of a filter helped though but now I haven't gone from stock right to this setup

Yeah only reason I did it. I'm only replacing that little stock bend because I figure the smooth pipe will help the sound a bit more over the stock rubbery and ridged bit lol

plain old cheap pvc street pipe works just fine, no melting whats so ever, and its painted with rustolium black paint and its still there. in take temps are over 120 most of the time, and higher.

its tight on the right side there but you can see the piant is still there. the coupler has been replaced last year it only lasted about 3 years. the paint is about 4 years old now.

Looks like you used a 90* bend. I'll have to see what we have around for couplers, I might just cut one so It doesn't bring it out so far to need a tight bend. Thanks for the input guys!

coupler is a rubber pipe coupler that had the metal cover over it, tear the metal off the clamps and thats what you have left. this one i got from lowes and is much thicker then the one i got at first from home depot first.

and yup thats a 90, my h/d didnt have a 22.5
 


So the TB and maf are both 3"? So I couldn't see any real point to 4" at all lol

the 4 inch comes into play because thats the fat side size of the street elbow.

air filters come 4 inch or 3 inch, some like spectra has a 1 inch ring to make the filter fit 3 inch or 4.
 
When you use 4" is acts like a charge pipe.

Also there is NO ISSUE with oiled filters, none, nada, zip, zilch. The only time there is ever a problem is when people clean them and reoil them and put too much oil on themselves. That is not the fault of the filter. I have been running oiled filters for 13+ years and have never had a MAF problem. I know many, many people who run oiled filters and not one of them has had any issues either.
 
Make sure you check the rubber coupler and clamps pretty often after installation. Mine loosened up a few times and I had to tighten the clamps again, but after the second time I never had a problem.

The coupler may have just shrunk on you. I didn't have that issue, but I can see it happening.
