99 GT won't run URGENT

Yeah I was taking a look at that earlier and I'm pretty sure it's the rear valve cover just leaking down but the shop used the cheapest gaskets they could find so somehow it does not surprise me.

Yeah that's what I get for being lazy I guess, I'll probably just take a loss and change them myself soon, but for right now I should probably try to get it running before this weekend because I'll be busy installing an HV3 on my 02 and won't have time to mess with this one.

Front gasket isn't too hard. It's getting the dog bone mount off that's the trickiest part. The rear cover is a bit more involved. You need to remove the alternator and the tensioner assembly. And some brackets that run over the cover. You don't have to completely remove the TA, just wiggle it off enough so the valve cover can slip out. Use Fel-Pro gaskets. I didn't change my grommets, but if yours are bad, replace them. Torque for the VC bolts is 89in lb.
 
Oh, and when you pull the tensioner assemy, good time to upgrade to aluminum coolant elbows if not already done.

You can sneak the valve cover past w/o needing to fully pull the alt bracket as Scott says.

Also.. big thing here.. were the grommets on the valve cover bolts replaced at the same time? If not.. your issue isn't the gasket, it's the grommet....which is all that puts pressure on the gasket to seal it.
 
I'm not sure I mean I wouldn't think so seeing as how these guys beat the oil filter cover off my dad's corolla with a sledge hammer because they didn't know to undo the little clip :|

You didn't mention that you bring your car to the worst hack wanna be wrench turners on the planet.

And we didn't mention that all the parts could have been had for right around $100, then half or so day of your time would have saved you $500 bucks.

My dad's car has not been back there and I have no choice in where my grandma, who owns the 99 this post is about, takes her cars. But I do all the work to my 2002 myself mostly using this forum. Ya'll literally have an answer for anything grand prix

once again,,,why fix whats not broken? i ran plastic 2 times, it only leaked once and it was the cast elbow that leaked on my 98, ( why i changed em in the first place)

i did install a metal one, but only to be in the cool kid club cause it got a engine swap. 2 inches of chrome, wooo hooooooo! lol

I had mine changed so it didn't have to be done again. My LIM gasket wasn't leaking coolant, I replaced it for preventative maintenance and to learn how to work on my car.
 
see most of the time its just the O rings that leak. once in a blue moon they blow one apart.

metal one has what sealing it? yup a O ring, what does a stock cast elbow on a 97-98 use to seal it, yup a O ring. o rings leak end of story.

why you dont fix it till its broken.
