Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

98 GTP transmission issues. Moves forward 4" at a time.

98 GTP, 120k, intake, DHP v1.0, nothing major done to the car obviously. Was previously having TCC issues, seem to have cleared up with the DHP ecu and and about 8oz seafoam transfix or whatever it's called. Fluid looks good, smells good. Don't know much maintenance history.

Wife got stuck coming through the snow that the plow pushed across the drive way. Got the car through and into the driveway. Driveway was ice and I'm guessing she might have over spun the tires and hit a dry patch. Though she denies it (go figure.)

The car moves back fine, rolls in neutral freely. When put into D, 3, 2 or 1 the car won't move unless some of that right pedal is given. When trying to move the car lurches about 4 inches, stops, 4 inches, stops all while for lack of better terms, clunking. When viewing from the outside with the car killer behind the wheel it seems to be binding the passenger side wheel. If it wasn't 27 degrees outside and I didn't have another fabulous GM product (project?) in the garage I'd dig a little deeper before posting.

I checked the fluid with the car off hoping to maybe find some tell tale glitter, no dice. BUT...with the vehicle OFF the fluid was super high on the dipstick. Not sure if that indicates a pump problem or not.

Either way, some professional insight would be great (for me and the car...have you seen my meds?)

Thanks in advance.

the fluid is supposed to be high with the car off. You might have hurt the differential or cv joint.

Diff is easy to check with a jack and a couple of minutes (hence you won't totally freeze to death). Although the diff feeds both wheels, so I doubt it's diff. Sounds a little more like a brake pad that somehow moved out of place and wedged or a band inside the trans that came off it's pin. Usually they can't do this..but let's pretend I've seen one put in wrong and give a similar issue.

HOLY EFFN COW. You are my new hero. Went out and looked. 5 seconds later I realized one of the caliper bracket bolts has gone missing. when I drive forward it binds in the wheel. I've got 17" mustang wheels on the car, and you can clearly see the "groove."

Thank you so much. Now I feel stupid.

damn, that sucks. off to find a new bolt. better then a blown tranny any day tho.

sadly this has happened to a few others. put some thread locker on the bolts. and make them tight. like tight. id check the other 3 bolts as well, maybe add the thread locker to them as well.

dont do that. just a line down the threads is all you need, or they never come off, at least they put up one hell of a fight.

I guess I should tell more of the story. I'm out of work, as I got out of the Army in June and it's tough out here. In September my wifes car ate a waterpump, thus shredding the timing belt and sending all 8 valves to the grave. So we parked the car in hopes of fixing it (it's a 95 neon that was the first car we owned 'together' and she refuses to let it go.) I had a 95 Mustang convertible at the time, and with 3 kids it was tough to get everyone where they needed to be in a 4 seater. So I traded the mustang for my GTP. So one decently reliable car. Last month I bought a 92 chevy truck for $400. Super solid truck believe it or not. Only catch being it had a 'bad trans,' brakes, and electrical system. When the Pontiac went down I went into super-fixit mode on the truck so that we'd at least have one vehicle. Well, I got it on the road in 24 hours. Trans was fine (pan bolts were finger tight, and no fluid was present.) Replaced some brake lines...all good. electrical problem was a bad ignition switch.

With this recent discovery I'm now (or will be soon) able to get everyone where they need to be for Christmas, as well as use the money I had saved for a trans for other things.

BillBoost, I don't think you understand what you just did for me. I very much appreciate it. And thank you to the rest of you for giving it a shot. What a great forum.

Doc.

That's awesome!

The same thing happened to me. My mother in law was driving my GTP and noticed a clunking an it would not go in reverse without pedal. I thought tranny for sure. I then found the loose caliper bolt. D'OH!

Glad to help out...

Much of the stuff I post is from direct experience... and well.. there's some hard lessons in life that we can pass on to each other.
