98 GTP Tranny Whine

Hey everyone,

First post...

Today on my way to work a noticed a whine almost immediately when I hit 30MPH which then goes away once hitting OD at approx 45MPH. I thought maybe it was the PS pump or a pulley, however, if I place the shifter in 1 or 2 it never makes the whining sound regardless of speed and doesn't whine once the car finally hits OD at 45MPH or so if I leave it in D. It also whines while stopped and in neutral. Any clues as to what could cause this? The whine increases intensity as the engine revs in the gears listed above.

check the fluid level??

Could be a plugged filter if you have never changed the fluid.

Two things tend to cause whine. A uh..stator bearing and when the trans has trouble getting fluid. Meaning a clogged filter etc.

So I checked the fluid and it seems fine. So to recap, every gear is fine except 3rd. That is the only gear that whines. Interestingly enough.. I disconnected the battery for an hour or so and now it doesn't whine anymore and is acting fine. Thoughts?

disconnecting should have reset the adaptive shifts and pressures. Which will likely come back as it relearns.

If it's good for now..super. Hopefully it stays that way

Sooo... after having a chance to diagnose further it actually appears as though it never shifts into third. The tranny begins whining around 25MPH on light throttle and what I thought was 3rd gear never engages. The tranny goes right to 4th(OD) at ~45MPH. What am I looking at here?

Either third gear clutches or a third gear sprag (one way bearing that isn't one waying anymore)
