98 gtp bad head gasket

so i dont know what to do.
i have a 98 gp with what i believe to be a bad head gasket
car has 130k mi on it and still runs good over short distances, but i wont drive it till i fix or sale it..
so i was wondering if this sounds like a head gasket or not..
started over heating, radiator and water pump do not leak, thermanstat seems to open, i can drive aprox 5 mi and then she over heats bad.
any ideas?
is a head gasket difficult on these, are the worth doing?
or should i try to cut the car lose for idk $2k?
let me know opinions
 


Overheating does not mean a blown head gasket. Usually a blown head gasket will put water in the oil quick, the oil will look like butterscotch pudding, and you will see alot of water vapor out the exhaust. You say it is overheating, that means there is a loss of coolant, did you check it. If it is low, you have to find out where the water is going. If it is a head gasket, dont wait to di it as the moisture will condense in the crankcase and of course mix with the oil and wear the engine out. You could also have air in the cooling system which caused temp spikes.

^x2 Sounds like air in the line or bad thermostat.....2 ways to check the thermostat....1) with the car running at normal running temp. grab the hoses to see if you feel any water running thru the hose. 2) Take the thermostat out the car and place the thermostat in boiling water. If the t-stat opens with boiling water, Its good! If not, u have a bad one.....
 
Car is a 98, if you don't know the history, put a new t-stat in. While cold, start the engine and let it warm up, watch the coolant, be sure it is circulating, I have seen the blades on water pumps corrode to nothing before.

My bet is the t-stat is stuck closed though.
 
i replace the themostate and still had the same problem, then i fushed system and had the same problem,
i replace it with water and purged the air and still has the same problem.
steam comes from the headers when it over heats.
and heater in the car only blows cold air...
so idk, might sell the car for 1500=( lol. if it is a bad head gasket, how hard is it to fix and is it worth it?
 
possible water pump issue replace the water pump t-stat and if no dice then its the head gaskets done worry its not to difficult to do it.
 


If you have steam out the exhaust, good possibility you have a head gasket...normally doesn't correlate wth overheating though. Pull your plugs and inspect them too, they may give you an indicator of what cylinder is leaking.
 
thanks for the help, gonna do the WP and hope its not a waste..lol, what should i expect to say, im gonna do it my self. oh yeah what should compression be on theses cylinders?
