98-03 Gtp vs 2004+ Gtp

Ive decided i want to buy a Gtp. I like the 98-03 gtp but i also like the 2004+ ones. But i have heard that the 2004+ arent as good for modding as the 98-2003. Is this true? I can afford the 2004+ gtp but if there were any negatives to modding it i would rather just buy a 98-2003.

Meh you say potato and i say potato. The PCM's in the 97s are different than the 98+ I never heard they were any harder to tune.

meh avoid 97s
98s and 99+ are slightly differant, 03 is its own deal
04+ has its issues
its a horse a piece.

all are pretty equal, minus the bodys, ive seen a couple 04+ cars with rotted core supports at 80kish miles.

just buy the cleanest low mileage car possible and have at it.

some would say that the older ones look nicer and in some cases I agree but the interior on the new ones is much better, and everything in general is built better.

If you can find one that looks like this I say go for it lol

All the comp g has is 3:29"s and a more expensive to replace tranny and the handleing package. All easily done to a reg gtp

comp-g will be the best to mod as it has the most performance parts to begin with

Meh, Comp-G's good if you want to do a cam, since you'll have to replace the lower intake manifold (may as well throw in a cam if you're diving down that far). If not, go with an '06+. I've seen a lot of 05's with the aluminum LIM, but heard of quite a few 05's with the nylon gaskets, too, so I'd go 06+ to be sure and just suck it up on the fuel gauge operating backwards (my opinion? Just repaint the gauge backwards).

Reason to get an old one? An extra $5,000 to play with.

To all of you saying 04+ has issues... I would like to know what they are. I've had an 06 for 8 months and my 04 for 2 years and haven't run into any issues other than maintnance (And issues I created myself during my topswap).

If you're planning on modding an 04+ get a 2004 or 2005 because HPTuners does not support 06+.

The only other thing I've noticed different as far as modding is that aftermarket throttle bodies can't be used becasue 04+ are drive by wire.

I would avoid a Comp G, tapshift is worthless and replacement parts cost more for a comp G.

Other than that, motors and transmissions are the same, aftermarket parts fit the same, and they can be just as fast.

HPT does not and will not support 06+ VINs. You have to get a PCM from an 04 or 05 and have your BCM changed to match that vin using a tech 2 (Generally dealer only).

SuperSlowGP and I just experianced this, on top of the $100 in non refundable tuning credits, he got quoted $100 for the BCM VIN change.

id get an 04-05, 05 would be my preference ebcause na 04's didnt get all the changes, if its supercharged it dosent mater but i wouldnt get a compg so 05 supercharged would be the best and easiest to upgrade

some upgrades are

returnless system plus and minus depending
steal gaskets already installed
cans till be tuned without any problems with hp tuners
comes stock with powder coated forged rods which the series 2 do not, they are cast iron, except 04 n/a still got the cast iron rods, hence why 05 would be my choice

series III supercharges is a much better supercharger m90 eaten that everyone wants

electronic throttle control vs by wire

tranny in 04 up already has hardened 4td clutch

intake ports are bigger

Thanks for all the help! I think im going to look for a 98-2003, i just like how those coupes look.
I was reading today though that you have to mod the 2004+ more before you put on a smaller pulley than the 98-2003 because they are more prone to KR. is this true?

yea because the blower is better on the 04, and the engine is a little stronger. with less boost you get more power on the 04 and up. thats why a lot of 97-03 guys want m90 superchargers, there much better.

steal gaskets already installed Most 05's, but not all (members of this site have had to replace the nylon gasket on their 05's), have aluminum LIM gaskets.

comes stock with powder coated forged rods powdered metal sinter forged connecting rods, not powder-coated rods - starting in 2004 on GTPs, 2005 for base/GT

electronic throttle control vs by wire -you'll mostly only notice the slightly increased throttle response with ETC

tranny in 04 up already has hardened 4td clutch Only on 04/05 gtp and 06+gt - N/A's didn't get it, if memory serves.

intake ports are bigger exhaust valves were also slightly bigger starting in 2003

Cylinder heads were also slightly redesigned for the Series III.
I think 2005+'s will also have DEXRON VI in the transmission instead of DEXRON III, but I could be wrong.
