97 GTP trouble

my son has a 97 GTP that has been over heating. we changed the thermostat, but that did not do anything to solve the temp problem. today he said he drove to school and when he parked the radiator boiled over. (just for some history, the people he bought the car from had put some stop leak in it for a pin hole leak)

what could be causing this? he said the temp. gauge was in the normal range when it boiled today.

Problem is you bought your son a 97.. Just giving you a hard time. But honestly I can't help. If the gauge was reading normal temps and it boiled over I dont know what it would be.

trust me...i tried to talk him out of it. the price was right, but not for all these headaches.

What I have learned about these cars as well as LT1 V-8s is when they have air in the system they will boil over to get rid of the pressure in the radiator. Which indicates to me that perhaps you have a plugged hose someplace in the system, or dex-mud. Check the hoses going to the heater core, if you can squeeze them and feel a crunch then chances are you had some DEX-Cool issues (as is the case with most cars that routine maintenance was ignored/neglected). You should really flush the system and check all the hoses to ensure they are serviceable. With that supercharged motor you could run the risk of damaging more then just the block.

Try bleeding the system and replacing the radiator cap.

i went and checked it. the lower heater hose ruptured. i replaced it and yes the top one does the crunch at the elbows. i will yank that one tomorrow. i'll have it flushed asap and hope that fixes the over heating issue. explain the "dex-mud" issue. i take it that's the brown crap that is all in the coolent and hoses. will flushing take care of that?
