97 GTP Steering Rack Replace

of course u have to jack it up and secure it with jack stands. take off both front tires, the new rack comes with new inner tie rods so u probobly should either replace your outter ones or use the old ones either way u need an alignment when done. take the tie rods off. there is a plastic cover where the rack bolts on the steering coluum u have to lift up the plastic from around the rack, i stick a long screwdriver in it to hold it up while i am doing the bolt, its one bolt, an 11 mm socket should get it with a couple extensions, i usually leave the bolt screwed in a lil bit and with the socket on the extension i put it on the bolt and hit it with the hammer so it opens up the spline a lil bit, there are two bolts with nuts holding the rack to the frame, they should be 18 mm on both sides, i have seen one side 15mm and the other 18mm but on these should be 18mm. hopefully the sway bar is not in the way to get the bolts out. i had an intrigue with that problem, also a 2006 gp with the sway bar in the way, i just undid the sway bar links and was able to get them out, on my 2000 gtp i did not have to touch the sway bar. my gtp has an electrical connector comming off the rack by that one bolt u have to un plug that it mught be by the trans range switch connector, hard to get to, then the two power steering lines, i use an 18mm open end wrench but u can use a line wrench i think 11/16 is close to 18mm. not sure exactly, once everything is disconnected u pry the rack from the frame and pull it out the drivers side, it is tight and can be fun by yourself but u can do it. let us know how it goes and good luck man. btw the 06 gp i did also had the hard left syndrome lol. new rack and it was fixed. some say u have to drop the rear engine cradle down a bit but i am not too sure on that. if this is the case then u have to position the jack stands on the frame of the car behind the cradle not on the cradle itself.

I cant believe an 06 would have the same problem. did you actually drive it?
