97 GTP Idleing issues or fuel pump? Help if you can.

So a couple of weeks ago I posted about some strange starting issues to paraphrase that issue...

Every now and then when I would fire up the car it wouldnt light up. Then I would try again right after and then the car started up. I thought it could have been a fuel pump or priming issue or my starter and since the post the problem didnt persist too much....

So lately ive been having ideling issues? I think they are linked since when I come to a stop the car starts idleing all over the place and and once the car just died in the middle of the road. She started up right after and drove off so that was good. But sometimes weather the engine is cold or warmed up ill be driving at just about any speed and the RPMs will jump around kinda jolting the car around and then level out. This happens every once in a while but seems to becoming more frequent.:th_sick1:

Does it sound like an 02 sensor or a fuel pump or a vacuum problem? I dont have alot of experience fixing this engine im used to old big block V8 outta K5s but im sure I could figure it out with your help thanks. I did search the forum for a while and couldnt seem to come up with my symptoms.

Thanks guys:th_thumbsup-wink: for such a quick response! Now is that an easy fix? Somethin I could read up on and do it myself or should I get it done?

two screws and unplug the wires....easy as pie.. its located on the throttle body u will recognize it when you get the new one..takes 5 minutes to swap. if for some reason this doesnt fix it (it does 95% of the time) i have seen on rare occasions booost bypass soleniods cause similiar problems. this will be a dealer part but try the iac first

but yea, my dad has this problem with his dodge durango. from cold it will NOT idle on its on. once its warm its pretty good. he also gets bad mpgs from it, he says. so yea, replace iac its super easy. might need torx security bits though. and check out rockauto.com. might be cheaper there for sensor.
i hate driving that thing haha. takes like 15 minutes to back out the driveway cus it dies 37 times.

ha ha beat you to it brandon:th_dancingpepper:

LOL! i was typing it when you posted it. i was like whatever. haha.

So good news bad new...

The IAC was a snap to replace. So I test drove the car for about two miles and their was initially a little RPM fluctuating but it wasnt bad just a little sputtering of the engine but that seemed to dissipate after a while. Ill update after the next drive.

The weird part was that the idiot bell was going off indiscriminately the whole time? Sometimes a series of chimes then it would stop and ten fifteen seconds later it started up again, all the way till I had it in park it kept on going off? This has never happened and I cant assume its just a coincidence any ideas?

hm. well did the IAC fix the running issue?? if not, maybe a CPS (crank position sensor) since u mention the RPM fluctuation.

and as far as the idiot bell that is weird. were there any SES lights?? did u leave the battery plugged in while you replaced the IAC sensor?? if not pull battery cables and let it sit then try again.

I drove the car for another 5 miles and the drivability issues seems to have gone away so thats good!

I really believe that these cars have a mind of their own and "Lil Blacky" ( Fell in love with that kids name for her horse in True Grit) just knows its supposed to be a project car so its gonna keep me busy with little things! Thanks for the help Brandon.:th_thumbsup-wink:

No problem buddy :)

I'm glad it's fixed. Definitely know what you mean about them having a mind of their own. Mine absolutely despises me. :th_king-evil:

So this issue is still popping up but at a abnormal interval, some drives the car will run just fine and then other drives the same symptoms are coming back.

The engine revs around when idling and engine will like sputter around while cruising. It hasnt died while idling at a stop light but the dam RPMs are all over the place. My buddy suggested that it might be the O2 sensor any thought on that guys/ Brandon?

Its not too bad of an issue but I just feel like this will cause other failures if this keeps up, I replaced the IAC so just looking for ideas before I take her into the shop and get it checked out but id love to avoid the 150 charge to run a diagnostics

Edit: As I read a bunch of threads im wondering if my engine is misfiring at all? I figured might as well get some new plugs ill start with that. Im hearing that Autolite 606 is the way to go for our GTPs? I wanna be able to put the best in their.

Yeah try plugs. It might help. But i'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say CPS sensor maybe? i could be wrong but im sure someone else can chime in. usually with CPS though the tachometer tends to fail, though sporadic RPMs are common with that.

I has a similar thing where my Rome where all over the place when idle but when I would give it gas it would go away. What and when I got the check engine light it said that it was my throttle body, so what I Ended up doing is checking vacuum lines and it was just disconnected it might just be that one of your lines isndisconnect or broken.

@Brandon, Ok what is the CPS is it as easy as the IAC? I doubt it but ill do it if that seems like the next logical step in this fix. Also I feel like my tach or my trip may be off? It feels like its tracking more miles then I drive? Like I typically get 380 miles per gas tank, is that right for my car? That has been bugging me ever since I got it. My DIC reads an average of 22MPGs so the math is right but im just not believing it.

So an update last night I was out with my fiance' and when I was cruising to a stop it died out. That was a first and really irritating cause I didnt even realize it as the light turned green and I had zero power! Once again it started right up and drive fine after that with a fee little hickups but yeah more symptoms to think about...

@Whitehispanic, So im guessing i can check vacuum lines pretty easily by taking the plastic cover off my engine and inspecting the hoses right?

As always thanks for your continued help guys.

yes, check the vacuum lines. you're gtp right? if so you will have vacuum Ts along the left (passenger) side of your engine that tend to break. trace it from that point on and find all vac lines to and from the tb and everywhere else you see them.
CPS sensor is not one you want to replace unless you know it's broken as it is a PIA to replace. it involves taking off the crank at the bottom i believe. not fun.
check all vac lines you can see. then come back and tell us what you find.

Yikes! Well Im gonna check my lines tomorrow, and my friend was wrong in his assumption I checked around and what he replaced wasnt the O2 sensor it was the MAF. So im gonna check the lines then maybe buy a new MAF but they are kinda pricey and it would blow if that wasnt the issue. Looks like im doin a full tune up on the GTP!!!
