97 GTP engine into 98 GTP

First post to site.
Thanks for any help.
Have had a 97 GTP for 3 years. Been sitting for a year with a tired trans.
Overall condition of vehicle is OK. Engine is in fine shape with some mods done by prior owner. SLP headers, rocker arms. Coldair package.
Might have had a PCM upgrade---how do you check for that???
Found a 98 GTP with a bad engine (this vehicle is in much better condition overall) and want to swap of engines.
Sounds straight forward to me.
Am I missing anything?
Thanks for your help.

Just make sure you swap EVERYTHING with it. 98 stuff stays with 98 stuff. The 98 PCM has no VATS, as opposed to the 97 PCM, which does. Also, I'm not sure as far as options, but my friends 97 didnt have the button on the DIC to turn on and off traction control, he also didnt have HUD. Just check options, swap oppropriate harnesses if needed, although you shouldnt have to, even the grand prix GTs have the plug for the HUD, and all the other plugs such as the DIC plug for the GTP DIC, ect. So you should be fine, just remember, 98 engine, 98 wiring harness, 98 PCM all stays together. Let me know if you run into any issues, ill be more than happy to help.

@boosted98 I think you go this post backward. He is wanting to put a 97 engine in to a 98 vehicle.

Engine should swap no problem. Plus, you can use the 98 PCM in the 98 vehicle and have a bit more fun with the PCM, then the 97 PCM, if you start tuning it.

I think though if you go 98 engine, you will have to have the 98PCM? We put a 99 PCM and we tried a 97 PCM in my friends 98 and it would die every time he would go to stop. When we swapped back to the 98 PCM it was fine. And, I would think if you were swapping it into a VATS car, you would need the parameters in the PCM for the VATS.....may be wrong on this, but, just wanted to throw that out there in case there was a problem. I did have it wrong in the last post thinking engine was going in the 98. So with that being said, I would say, keep the 97 stuff in there and see if its fine, just from my experience, it didnt work. If not, then your looking at converting over the wiring and PCM from the 98 car to the 97...
