96 GTP wheel covers?

Apk07

I posted this depressing picture of my hand-me-down 96 GTP in a different thread (still looking for a fender)... The car is really clean aside from that, and the wheels. They seem rusted/corroded/etc. Does anyone have experience trying to clean these wheels off? Is it even worth it? Also, would plastic wheel covers be worth popping on there? Would they even go fit? xD

Someone told me once that I was supposed to scrub/scrape them clean with aluminum foil or a brillo pad... I don't want to ruin them though

I'd hate to see what's under that body cladding that were those like to rust especially on the rear quarters

That car may be dangerous to drive
It's not worth killing yourself or someone else

Have you checked the sub-frame?...How about the rear end links?

Believe it or not there's very little rust elsewhere. I was going to crop that bum fender out but I didn't get around to it :P If you think that's bad, you should have seen the '86 oldsmobile rustbucket I was driving before. I'd take a picture of that one, but the microscopic shockwave of the camera shutter would cause it to crumble into a pile of red dust (michigan isn't kind to cars).

But anyway, why that's the only part rusting is beyond me. I'll have to try scrubbin' the wheels now that I know it won't ruin them. Gotta get a SES light checked at the 'zone today, too.

Well the wheels are painted gold, and after a fair amount of scrubbing with a brillo pad, soap, and hot water, it seems to just be stripping/chipping the gold paint off (which doesn't bother me, I don't care for the gold... looks too much like rust when it isn't). Should I try something stronger to keep stripping the paint until its bare aluminum? The brillo pad doesn't seem to be cutting it

Get aircraft stripper if you want to go to bare aluminum it's what most people use to strip those wheels

if you go the aircraft stripper route, where rubber gloves, that crap burns like mad. but removes paint like a champ!

the stripper, and a power washer, and wearing long sleeves and with a full face shield for safety would make short work of them rims.

i repeat! DON'T GET THAT STUFF ON YOUR SKIN, ESPECIALLY YOUR WINKIE.

If you purchase a variable speed polisher you will be able to knock the chipping gold off and get a real nice shine. Or take some mothers polishing compound, steel wool and some cloths and maybe an afternoon to clean them up.
