95 3.1 Ghost problem. No start. No crank.

I have a 1995 3.1 Grand Prix which has a very intermittent problem. Every once in a while, it simply will not start. No crank no nothing. Dead. Then two hours later, (or next day) it's fine. It will start every time for three weeks or so. And then the ghost problem happens again. It is not the key capacitor, because I bypassed that a few years ago.

Does anyone have a possible answer?

Thanks in advance.

Check your connections to your battery, they might just be a little lose. It will give you a problem like that where one second it works then the next it doesn't.

Could even be the starter getting old.. but I'd test it first with a hammer tap when it decides to act up.

Thanks for your responses.
There is no click - no engagement sound whatsoever.

I think the problem is a little more complicated and insidious than a bad starter or loose battery connection.

The car has done this over a period of three years; with different starters and batteries. It's an intermittent safety lock issue.

The crazy thing is that it resolves itself every time with no jiggling wires - no nothing - just is fine a little bit later

It does is about twice a month and has done it for a period of over the last three years. (It'll also go 3-4 months without doing it all.)

I've searched online and it seems like a few people have this exact same problem. (but no real solution ever follows their question.)

I also had this problem with the 1995 Lumina, but it was not as bad.

Please help. This is my daughters car and she lives in a not so great part of the city and I'd hate for her to get stranded.

Thanks again in advance.

Try shifting it to neutral and trying to start. If there is something off in your shifter linkage, then it won't crank in park cause it thinks it is in reverse. Just a thought... Ours did that years ago along with not letting me remove the key sometimes.
