92 Gran Prix Tranny

I bought a 92 Grand Prix that will not move. The story I got was the lady drove it to the gas station and filled it up that when she left she stopped at the first light and the car would not move after that. I have never heard of a tranny just instantly dropping so is there something simple I should look into for fixing this problem?

Thanks

This should be moved to the 4T60/E section and could be either one because of the year. It is not uncommon for a transmission on its way out or even just when everything is working fine to leave you stranded and quit moving. It could be a number of things from extremely low fluid levels to broken parts but is hard to say without doing some testing. Does it do anything in any gear position on the shifter?

I tried the tranny in all positions and it did nothing in all positions. I pulled the pan and filter tonight and did not find any metal shavings at all. The car has 170000+ miles on it and I do not know if they ever changed fluid or filter. The fluid did not smell burnt, it was just a little darker than new. I was kind of suprised not to find any metal shavings in the pan.

It is likely a clean break somewhere in the trans and will need torn apart to determine the cause of failure.
