91 octane benefits in N/A 3800?

I have done a good amount of tuning on my L36. I started with 93 as this is what i used in my DOHC before the 3800 swap. I was shocked that it didn't respond too well with extra timing. so I step down to 89 and then to 87 and noticed that there was no diff in the amount of timing i could command.

Results... on the L36 in my car could care less if it had 93 or 87. since my wallet likes the 87 that is what i run.

For all you n/a guy's without a tune running on 91 it wasting your money,.

This.

Most people still don't understand what octane does.

Octane is NOT a power adder.
Higher octane does NOT burn cleaner than lower octane from the same place.
Running more octane than necessary will HURT gas mileage.

Couldn't agree more.

disagree....Girlfriend has a malibu and my sister has a G6 both with the 3.5L. scanned both on 87 and seen 7-9*kr filled em both with 93 and rescanned 0* across the board . While its not as beneficial as it would be with a tune, it still helps

Yes in cases such as that (where you see a lot of KR), 93 would be benificial and you WILL see performance gains because the computer wouldn't have to pull timing.

Otherwise, putting premium in an N/A is pretty much worthless. And it WILL decrease your gas mileage.

That's a 3.5L not a 3800. Either way, kinda a waist of money . I still agree with blueguy and Grimsin.

Reread Bill's post, he's the only one who seems to know what's going on.

With a N/A grand Prix, you'll see no difference in WOT no matter the year. The cruising cells' timing is what matters. 97-03 will probably not benefit at all. But 04-08 has more timing added to the cruising cells, enough to cause the 04-08 models to have KR at part throttle. The higher octane still won't affect WOT, but it will allow the car to make use of the extra timing while cruising, giving you better MPG.

I get more miles out of a tank of high octane than 87, which winds up making the 93 more cost effective in the end.
