91 grand prix fluid question

got a 91 grand prix GTP, pulled the cap off the tranny plan and and oil pan and drained everything. the fluid from the tranny was black brown and nasty XD and oil was worse. Now i keep hearing that for 91 and older the transmission and power steering fluid where the same. is this true? because i need to refill the transmission fluid in my car and at the same time i have no power steering fluid. so my question is. Do i add transmission fluid into the power steering resoviour? or do i need to add PS fluid to the pump then manually pump ATF fluid back into the tranny? It's a manual:confused:
 


ATF is automatic transmission fluid, you need gearbox oil for the manual. It's usually thick, viscous and golden brown in a new bottle....

Trans fluid and power steering fluid are very similar, and on older vehicles were used interchangeably, but the two systems are not linked.
