91 gp monoleaf

i have a question about the monoleaf in the rear suspension....well more of a will it work.... i have a 91 grand prix which has a monoleaf rear suspension.....and i have a corvette c6 monoleaf in my garage.... they look about the same size so i was wondering if it would work in my car. now i dont know if itll break under the weight of a heavier car like the grand prix..... but i wouldnt be asking if i knew...

and why are you trying to do this?

i dont know if you have ever had to replace one, but its not fun... my vote is if there is nothing wrong with your leaf leave it alone... as far as i remember its made of fiberglass and it is quite easy to break it when installing it.

i have replaced one before... hence why i have a c6 factory one... i put an aftermarket one on a friend of mines corvette. and for the reason its simply handling and to drop the back end an inch or so. oh and the c6 one is composite.

i find it difficult to believe a c6 has a monoleaf...3rd gen camaros dont even have leaf springs.

obviously you dont know that much about corvettes.. the c6 is the 2004 and up....

the image says enough.... its the rear end of a c6 corvette convertable. its called a transverse leaf or a monoleaf suspension.

I was talking about the mono leaf on a gp. as far as i remember it has to be forced into place then sandwiched at the ends.

the vette's you undo 6? bolts and it comes out, at least thats what it looks like in the pic.

you also may have to cut the vette leaf to make it physically the same size as the gp's. which probably isnt the best idea.

as for breaking, you shouldnt have an issue i would think. the c6's are close to having the weight split 50/50. gp's the weight is all up in the front. I would think if you actually get it in the gp you are going to have one hell of a stiff ride.

try and find a leaf already out of a gp and size them up side by side, i would be interested to know if they are relatively the same.

Thats just my .02, feel free to prove me wrong.

If you cut it, it'd probably destroy all of its strength.

Didn't the first gen W bodies have two leaf springs mounted transversely? I dont think it'd really work at all because of the height difference between the centre mounting point and the spindles.

the vettes you do have to force into place that pic has the vehicle on a drive on lift so all the weights on the car.

and as matt said cutting the leaf would dramatically reduce the strength and affectiveness of it.

and for it having 2 transverse leafs no it doesnt... at least mine doesnt.... it has one leaf if i have the time tomorrow ill go and take a pic of the rear suspension showing the leaf. at the same time ill measure the length of the spring.

and for height issues i already planned on making mounts considering they dont bolt onto the control arm the same way.

edit... the height difference is what im counting on to lower the car.

Then granted its the same width i'd say go for it.

It'd probably really tighten up the rear end which is the biggest issue with these cars because they're FF layout meaning all the weights in the front.

The only picture i've seen of a 1st gen W body was from my haynes manual which is ****ty to say the least.... And thats what it showed me, two laterally mounted leaf springs between the two lateral arms. then a shock mounting to the shock/strut tower. IIRC :D

i have eibach dual compression springs going in the front to balance out the entire car. as well as kyb struts for front and back. the plan is to tighten up the car to corner better.

edit... oh and the pic i think you were looking at was a 93-94 gtp with the dohc 3400 i think they had the dual leafs

I would also like to see this done. it sounds like you know your s***.

as long as you physically have room for the vette spring I say go for it. things can always be fab'd and modified as needed once you can see what you are dealing with.

lol thats what 2 years of auto tech and 1 and a half years of fabrication will do... yeah like i said if i have the time tomorrow ill go take a pic of the rear suspension and measure it at the same time to see if itll fit. ive gotta go pick up parts tomorrow for the motor so ill be busy most of the day....

Ok heres the pics of the underside of the grand prix....

This is the drivers side rear wheel. It shows the transverse monoleaf.

This is the passangers side... matt is this what you were looking at? this is either a track bar or a 4 link bar I couldnt tell if theres a second one up top....

Heres a pic of it from the side of the car.

its raining out at the moment and just wanted to take a few quick pics while I remembered. I didnt measure it because just as I was walking back to the car with a tape measure it started to pour.... So if anyone knows the measurements of the monoleaf and can save me the trouble that would be great.... I need the total length and the length between bolts for now.

i probly wont beat you to measuring but if i get the chance to ill post it

Idk about that... I'm preoccupied with the motor at the moment... I'm rebuilding it... So not alot of spare time with something that can wait....

total length: about 56 inches
between the bolts: about 20 inches

I meant end bolts but the total length means it wont work... the corvettes is 60 inches 4 inches longer which will most likely hit the spindle.... Oh well.... looks like I gotta order a lowering spring.

it was hard to say cuz of measuring around everything and laying under my car. i could try to see again to get more exact measurements.

yeah its pretty cramped under the car..... it sucked when i had to do a fuel pump and i didnt have a jack...... and it probably wont be that much longer. itll probably be shorter if anything. either way im probably gonna just order a new one seeing as i already have everything else.
