85 Turbo Trans Am

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Okay so I'm just kinda realizing that this uni body car is either going twist in half or I'm going to have to spend serious money to put sub frame under it and sub links and reinforce it like crazy and that may not fully do it. So unfortunately I think I'm going just do the 383 save the turbo for a different motor and vehicle. And put it in the 76 trans am and its 383

The 383 will be make 400+ by itself lol. Add the turbo and I am way past the point of twisting a frame. And sub frames are a lot for this car. Ive also decide I dont want to fck this car up cause it was handed down to me it was my fathers gift for when he got back from desert storm and id like to keep passing it along to my son I've just decided to go with the 383. Then in my 67 I'm gutting it doing full roll cage two bucket seats and doing 383 twin turbo 40mm and 78mm or something just huge and bad a$$. I'm close to finishing the plastic for entire interior been a lot work

Re: 85 trans am!!!

You can get weld in SFC's from UMI Performance for $230. My 98 is set up with their stuff, great products & customer service.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

you guys are amazing thank you. You have regiven me hope for this car lol I will definitely take a look.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

I've been down this road with my 98, any questions just ask. If I don't know it I know ppl that do.

One other suggestion if the motor is not too late. Since you doing a turbo build I would seriously look at LQ4 blocks from 99-04 years. It's an iron block that can be acquired cheaply (used in trucks). Bore it to 4.030" and you have a 408ci with a 4" stroker crank. If left alone, it will handle most boosted applications.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Shoot, I've seen people re-gasket them and toss them right in a car and make silly amounts of power with just head studs.

I'd honestly do that and use the motor you're building now for the other bird you were talking about.

What trucks are they in Chevy? Ford? Dodge? And I have a 350 Chevy 4 bolt main from a 74 truck that I was going to use and stroke it.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

I was going to skip the turbo and still do sub frame. I'm try shoot for at least 400 HP if I can get more ill be happy. I was going to use the turbo in the 76 firebird. Its got a better body to withstand the abuse ill through at it. It also doesn't have any sentimental value so wont bother me if it gets messed up.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

You can pull off 400hp easy with any LSX heads/cam/headers setup. My LT1 is a 355 (350 bored .030") with heads, cam, ported manifolds...I make around 410whp.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

So which would be better a LS 5.3 or LQ4 6.0 to take the abuse of boost? I'm working on the 76 firebird motor same time as the 85 T/A motor. I have two 350 and a 305 one 350 four bolt and one two bolt. Plans for the 76 is strip it through roll cage and big motor in it take to the strip only
