85 Turbo Trans Am

Re: 85 trans am!!!

start was tested its good ive got 4 of the 6 bolts holding the transmission out other two later got the engine mount bolts out its just the block oil pan crank and pistions so once the trans is disconected im going to pull the motor out by hand its not that heave ive picked it and the trans up together just sitting there it was kinda heavy but i think once its free of the trans i will be able to get it out just finished buying the 350 i go pick it up this sat. the plan for it is double hump heads perfomance intake (i have alread) mid to high performance cam heads polished new gaskets all around full synthetic oil edelbrock carb and have the cylenders polished and have some fun

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Re: 85 trans am!!!

just got the last two bolts out of the bell housing and 1 bolt out of the fly wheel now 2 bolts left in the fly wheel and the engine is coming out!!!

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Nice find if they aren't cracked.
Might want to take them by a machine shop and have them fluxed to be sure.
I'm still holding on to two Built sets.
Good ones are getting hard to come across.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

there at the machine shop there good there being polished and planned out right now and new seals

Re: 85 trans am!!!

sweet. thats my favorite body style of any car of all time. happy for ya!

BUTTTT, you have to ditch the ground effects, paint it black, and get a KITT front fascia and a red light scanner.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

okay so got new 350 sitting in the garage on engine stand started tearing down going to replace the bearings in the crank have the crank polished and balanced then have motor blue printed and cylinders polished have new seals put on the pistons and have the pistons polished asking for new bearings and cam & rollers and roller rockers for birthday and Christmas

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Alright an update for you all here still saving up to get motor built right cars going to stay the way it is not going to go full blown and do a full restor on it. It will cost more to do it then will be worth it in the end the most expensive 85 T.A. i found was for $9,800 and it was amazing looking clean and fully restored and wasnt even worth 10k ill have $3,600 to $4,200 alone in the motor. so seat covers in the front new speakers new motor, rebuilt stronger tranny, rebuilt rear end and new brakes all around and leave the drums in the back. new window and t top seals and call it good and ill still spend alot on it lol

Re: 85 trans am!!!

you could do a rear end swap with disc brakes i think

This, you can pick up F-body (think 98-02) 10 bolts with disc brakes for next to nothing. I know a guy here in Houston that has several 80's F-body's running them. Very simple swap.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

oh yea theres tones of kits to do it and tones of things out there i could swap it with its very easy conversion but at the moment main focus is getting it running and over time ill do other things like that and its easyer to do burn outs with drums ive got new tires for the car already but i want to smoke the old ones off lol.

Absoltly happening first

1. Engine built (355, 1500-5700rpm comp-cam, stock 350 heads ported, 350 cranked turned 10 under, h beam connecting rods, flat top pistons, 650cfm edelbrock or holly carb)
2. Transmission rebuilt (700r4, built heavy dutie, trans-go shift kit)
3. Rear end looked at and gone over (10 bolt posi track is whats under it right now its staying)
4. New brakes and rotors all around (Duri-max gold C brakes they have life time warrenty as long as you own the car)((auto zone))
5. New seals (t tops, doors, back hatch)

Later down the road
1. Rear brakes upgrade
2. New interior
3. Fresh paint same color

Re: 85 trans am!!!

lmao ill update yall with some new ones when the car gets moved its sitting under a cloth car cover and in the snow at the moment my buddy told me he doesnt use his garage except for storage i can park it there and work on it there. ive already got my heads block and crank now i need a good machine shop btw theres some pics at the beggining of this

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Why go with a 355? If you're already going to be getting the crank worked on, why not step up to a 383 or 396? Just curious.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

not looking for a stroker or gas hog lol and cranks only getting worked because it had a spun bearing but had it inspected and is still a solid crank so why toss the crank just have it turned and dont have to by another its cheaper to have it turned vs buying a new one and also only reason its getting board to a 355 is because of that one spun bearing too
