5x115 vs 5x114.3 Official Debate

Hey guys,

So I found some awesome MSR wheels for a good price. They are 18x7.5 with a 5x114.3 lug and a 42mm offset. I REALLY want to go buy them ASAP but I am a little uneasy about not riding a stock 5x115 bolt pattern. I know, I know, guys ride them all the time but there are also people out there who say it will mess up your studs and obviously THEY ARE NOT THE STOCK SIZE. After riding many different rims, styles, and fitments I know that subtle differences can and usually will give you problems. Tires and rims are nothing to mess around with and I want to avoid any problems I could possibly have(don't tell me to go stock because we all know a fresh set of wheels can make a car :th_winking:)!

So please someone share some solid info on this offset difference!


Also...if I purchase these MSR wheels what tire would you recommend in order to make my setup as close to stock as possible for maximum performance

Any suggestions would be really appreciated! Let's get this thread going so that we can abolish this offset debate once and for all.

Everyone will agree that 5x114.3 is not the stock specifications. If you are going to run outside of stock perimeters, you would use hubcentric rings.

Many people don't, and yes, they are fine. But why risk being "THAT" guy who did have an issue???

Yes get hubcetric rings that fit our bore 70mm and MSRs hub of 73mm, it kills the vibration if you get any.
 
metal hub centric rings will last longer then cheap plastic ones from my own experience with them

do some math and look at the actual difference in measurement for the bolt patterns. its so minimal there isn't even an issue. a 5x115 wheel could have enough slop in the tolerances to equal it out with a true 5x114.3 wheel.

and hub rings have nothing to do with the bolt pattern. they have everything to do with the hub bore.
 


Well the hub rings will take weight off the studs and put the main resting point of the car on the hubs, where it belongs, right?

Then all you need to worry about with the other bolt pattern is.. will the studs go into the holes... which, yes they do.

The hub lip combined with the hub ring to make it the correct size will center the wheel on the hub, so all you have to do is torque the lugs down and you're set. There really is no discussion or debate like there is for exhaust sound or intake bs. This bolt pattern works for our cars, and many people have tested that theory in long term applications. It's been thoroughly proven.

I think those guys and places who cry about the 114.3 bolt pattern snapping lugs and damaging things are thinking about if you make the wheels lug centric and dont use a hub ring. Then I could see problems happening.

I've ran factory wheels, and mustang wheels...

and LOL @ people on other boards who snap wheel studs and blame it on the .7mm difference. Get real ya nubz. I ran 5x114.3 since '07 on the blue car, over 60k miles...and of which, were not easy miles...and the car was far from stock.
 
Just case you were wondering, 0.7 mm equals out to be 0.02756 or less than a 1/32" of an inch. Course by time you disperse it between all five holes, it makes a difference but still very minute.

Diggin the whip!! What size wheels you riding and how low is that drop? Coilovers, springs or airbags?

Isn't the measurement the distance between two lugs that are across from each other and not the radius of the pattern?
 


MRW - How to measure bolt pattern

From center to outside of opposing hole. Like I said, the 0.7mm is minute, but does make a difference. Not enough distance to be overly concerned in my opinion. That is the purpose of the hubcentric to reduce stress on any lug that may have uneven pulling pressure from the wheel not being centered.
 
I just had a guy from discount tire tell me that he wouldnt mount a 114.3 wheel on my car........then i walked out laughing.
