4T65E-HD Question...

Ok, so my trans is falling apart, and the fact that I LOVE BOOST is not helping at all.... Petal to the metal around town is killing that 4T65 so... I need opinions... Who sells a good, quality Master Rebuild kit for the HD Trans... I am gonna do it myself, but still need a quality, full rebuild kit for it to get the job done right. I know Intense Racing has a full kit, and I think 3800Performance may have one too... Trannyman, your input is always welcome!!! LoL Thanks!

I sell a full line of parts and offer tech support for rebuilds so if you want to tackle it yourself I can certainly help you out. There is a LOT more to a good solid rebuild than what parts you use! HOW the transmission is built is what makes it last and I can give you pointers along the way. There is a full lineup of most of the popular parts on my website but you wont know everything that you need until the trans is apart and everything has been inspected.

Ok... So the trans rebuild is complete. Just finished it up. Took me and a buddy about a day an a half to get it done. So, about 16 hours or so. If someone can tell me how to add pix on here, I can show what we did!

Well, here is what we found... First gear clutches were completly whipped out. Second wasnt too bad, 3rd was also gone, there was no friction material left on the disks. Is retarded as it is to say, my OD bands were also pretty bad. I dont even know how you whipe out 4th... My 2-3 Solinoid was also bad, We tested it, but no one was home, so he was a gonner. That was about it. Wasnt toooo bad. Its not a hard job. I think the hardest thing to do is to take the damn thing out of the car. But she runs great so I am excited. Not bad for my first trans rebuild.

Still sputtering along on my rebuild. Last night I got into the input. I can see why people want better 3rd clutches. Mine were Toast, blackened and missing chunks, both on the "dots" and flakes off the outside edge. But since this particular tranny has 130k on it, and the fluid was so degraded <original>, I'd blame that long before I'd call it a weak spot in design. All the frictions and steels in this tranny look like she-it. I also found about 1/2'' radius of the outer lip seal was folded back, caused by a small chunk of the aforementioned clutch lining getting caught underneath the lip. Banging into 3rd gear, anyone?

Now is where I own up to screwin the pooch. I was taking the input thrust bearing off, and instead of snapping out, it snapped apart. I was tired and was prying the bearing apart instead off prying it off. An hour later I gave up looking for the last pin bearing. Grrr... oh well. I just wanted to be done with the input before I quit for the night.

Yeah, it happends. It takes a lot of concentration to work on those things so mistakes do happend. I made a few of my own. Just gotta step back, relax and it will all turn out good. My car also had 130K on it, so... I was right there with you. I think I am deff gonna add a performance trans cooler. I know that some people will argue that we dont need it, but I am hard on my car, I know that and I want a little extra protection. Heat kills trannys, plain and simple so... LoL What kind of rebuild kit are you using???

did you get your parts through the trannyman?

I actually did not. I got a ZZP ACDelco overhaul kit. My budy was selling it. Got it for $40. Couldnt beat it.

I got the "Master" kit from T-man before the trans ever came out of the car. I could have saved a few dollars going elsewhere, but I don't mind paying a guy for knowing what he's doing, and the kit he puts together has all the "right" parts in it.
I knew the steels were gonna be toast, just from the condition of the fluid, and the debris that was in the filter when I dropped the pan. Straight out ordered most of the parts I knew I was going to need also. PCS, stator bearing, this and that.. can of flush.
Got another 4th clutch cookie cutter tube, pump shaft, bushing and thrust kits locally, after I got into it. Also got a TCC Sol. just for giggles. Prolly not bad, but it threw a 1811, so I think it would be foolish not to swap it out..

Bastard. 40 Bucks. Jerk. :th_tongue2:

If ya know your gonna drive it a lot, and ya KNOW your gonna beat it like a stolen police car, a t-cooler makes sense. They're cheap. This one is probably live out its years as a work car, so I'm just going with the colder t-stat, should help the trans run 5-10 colder, so good enuff for me. I'm old. I get in the car, turn up the tunes loud enough to drown out the voices in my head, and go home.

LoL Yeah i was originally planning on getting it from trannyman, but my buddy mentioned that he had one and never used it, so I couldn't pass up the chance. Plus mamma delco lasted 130k in the car, i figured it couldnt be that bad as a replacement. I am also not working at the momment so I couldnt really spend too much, had to do it on a budget. :o
