37 foot pounds plus 120 degrees





37# +120* is like 65+lbs easily... Lol, never understood the degree reference when just providing torque spec is sufficient... For the record, I guess too, like that one, if +120, I would just go 1/4 turn more and a scutch.

Just get studs and make it easy (90lbs) hahahaha

thats it. watch a vid on how to set it up, that right angle rod needs to be set so the gauge cant spin. you need to set it up and zero it for each bolt as you go.

the torque specification is to apply the force to begin to stretch the bolt. the angle specification is the additional turn to actually stretch the bolt through its elastic phase and maximize the clamping force. from a technique point of view, the angle needs to be a smooth pull, not yank-yank-yank, so the bolt stretches then re-freezes in one continuous motion.
 
That means if I'm using a long handle ratchet, I need to torque the angle with one big swing, or would a breaker bar be better ?
 
breaker bar is what i used.

im just gonna say, this bolt stretching is about the single most un natural thing ive ever done, you'd never pull on a bolt and make it this tight. how they dont snap ill never know, but it sure feels that way.
 


Wow, it's a good thing I asked because I've been looking at torque wrenches that only go up to 75 foot pounds.
 
Just got back from the machine shop. The machinist there said 37 foot pounds plus 120 degrees sounds WAY TOO TIGHT. But then he said he's not a mechanic and has never torqued those rocker arms. I then went to a pro repair shop downtown and the guy there said he thinks that sounds too tight too, but he couldn't give me a definite answer. He suggested that I do some more cautious research. He suggested checking with an online Buick forum, but I told him that most Buick owners are not mechanics and that they only have questions about their power lumbar support.

The one thing I find interesting though is that the re-usable Competition Cams rocker arm bolts have a spec of 25 foot pounds and zero degrees.

Hold up a second.

Head bolts are 37 plus X to start..then the inner 4 bolts get more degrees.
Rocker bolts...which you mentioned in your last post.... NO WAY, STOP THE TRUCK!!!! They are not 37 plus 120
