3.8L S/C Recal. Quick question.

I read the info about the recal, and it said engine oil drips on the exaust manifold.... Well guess what, I have been smelling strong oil odors whenever i get out of my car and or pop the hood.

A few days ago, I realized that the actual engine is leaking oil! (Oh great) The car doesnt burn oil (Blue smoke out the exhaust) or run sluggish at all. I am now starting to see a small drop of oil (About the size of a dime) in the drive way when I move the vehicle.

With this being said, I would like to look into this recal, and see if I can get it done.

So my question is, to get the recal work performed, Could I go to any GM/ pontiac dealership and get the work done for free? Sad enough I dont trust the place I bought it from to get work done on the car(Check my story). How would I go about getting the work done?

Thanks!

well i was in the same boat as you seriously this will solve your issue.... Ok i heard about the recall and called my local GM dealer up. i said i would like the recall done on my GTP soon they said no problem. I said can i bring her in today. they said let me shedule you an appointment............ how does 3 pm sound. duh i said ok and i asked him this is all free and covered by GM correct. the awnser was yes then my jaw hit the floor and was excited haha new parts for free NICE. anyways it took about a hour and a half to get her back but she got the new gasket and DONE. so just call ur local GM dealer "you trust and go from there and shedule an appointment. Have fun and good luck man!

most dealers don't have the parts in stock as GM wants to know the vin of the car they are going on, so it may take a couple days

Has anyone heard anything else on whether or not you can get rembursed if you have already changed the valve cover gaskets yourself?

wait.. so its the valve gaskets?.. I Took it to a friend who is a mechanic, and he says something was replaced on it. I think he may have been talked about some new gaskets where on and he could tell they were new. Im going to take a pic of it tmw morning and post it on here. I also want to see if anyone can posisble see what may be leaking

Thanks for all the info!

The recall replaced the front valve cover gasket, and redoes the front plug wires, via removing them from their factory installed plastic shield, and installing them loose, and having wire separators on them now.

Its under a recall, so yes, its free parts and labor. Just call the dealership YOU trust, and provide them your VIN # and make an appointment.

If you have already had your front valve cover gaskets replaced by yourself or a shop, GM will refund you (as much as they see justifiable on their end) in full. The GF spent almost $200.00 to have hers done, and GM only gave her back about 1/2 or 7/8 of that I believe.

I replaced mine a long time ago, and don't have a receipt for my gaskets, so screw it. Better me doing it than any dealer ship around here. Honestly, I don't trust anybody else under my hood. Especially these so called ASE certified mechanics they hire at the dealerships. They are about as skilled as the high school kids at Wal-Mart pushing carts in.

Same here. Replaced mine awhile back also, just seeing if anyone had the info for anyone else that didn't know. I'd rather do all my own work too. That way if something messes up, I know it's on me and don't have to go through this long drawn out drama. Less headache.

Here is what the front valves look like:

And this is where i think the leak may be coming from. This picture is right underneath the S/C blower:

What do you guys think? Do you think the recall has been performed already?

im sure theyll run ur vin and let you no just give it a call man not to big of a deal even if they did it already haha

You have had your valve cover bolt grommets replaced at one time for sure. So chances are, the gaskets have been done as well.

The mess you see up by your injectors looks to me like every other car that has cracked LIM gaskets. If it gets any worse, you will start to see coolant puddling around your injectors. :th_thumb-down:

Easy fix...takes a few hours to complete. Basic hand tools, and new gaskets. Only thing you need that might be considered a special tool is a torque wrench.
