3.4 mods

I recently acquired a 1996 GTP with the 3.4 24 valve sixer and was wondering if there were any worthwhile mods? Anyone have any experience with a handheld tuner? dyno tune? exhaust? Aftermarket CAI? Intake manifold? or aftermarket throttle body? Of those mods that do exist, what kind of HP/TQ improvements will I see. I am not expecting to make my GTP really fast, but something to kick it up a notch would be really nice.

You can make your own intake pretty nicely & cheap last I checked. I know if you have it apart and your good with a dremel or die grinder I am sure you could probably port the throttle body and the intake manifold/heads ifyou have it apart. If not...a custom exhaust sytem and headers...maybe 20-30 crank horsepower increase? Check these guys out for the 3.4 DOHC. They know their stuff.

Add more fuel and advance spark, they reduced the amount of fuel and retarded the spark to lower horse power back when this engine was a prototype. the reasoning for this is that they kept going through transmissions. they were up to 275hp at one point, i'm not sure if it was BHP or WHP but either way, that's alot..

i owned a 93 way way back gtp 3.4 they screwd me bad without that added hosepower from using a maf. i wish i knew then the answers to these mod questions about the 3.4.... i broke my tranny stock everything oops....somehow i ended up getting the pieces from a scrap yard....hard to find at the time. i think now you could make a tranny to withstand the wrath of the 3.4s 275 horse....

ive heard the best way to go with a the trans is a gahret 5 speed or something.

i know a guy that had a supercharger set up then a turbo set up on a 3.4.... said he blew alot of tranies thru out his journey.

I Recommend scavenging for a Getrag 284 5 speed that came with the 3.4 Dual Twin cam for those models. Not the 282 5 speed that came with the 3.1 multiport

I agree, the Getrag 284 5-speed is the right tranny to look for, but DO NOT change the timing on your cams, chances are high that changing the timing can royally screw up the engine. Only changes for the timing is regular maintenence, other than that stay away from them unless you have extensive knowledge on the quad cams. Its a pain in the A$$ when you change the belts also, but anyways do a cold air intake, E3 sparks and wires, and I believe if you've got the program on your laptop and an OBD II USB adapter you can also fine tune your performance. All together with small mods you should expect ATLEAST a 35-45 hp increase, and you will notice the changes :th_thumbsup-wink:

5 mpg per plug?? what the hell are you on? you would only get an increase of 1.5 mpg at the most with a 3.4 Do you even own a car with a Quad cam 3.4? I own a 1990 Grand Prix with a 3.1 Multi-Port, and a Z34 Monte Carlo with the 3.4 Twin Dual cam, and both have those mods. I know what I'm talking about:th_shakinghead2:

dude take a deep breath and exhale through your nose:th_winking:

E3 plugs are a joke...huge waste of money...and I could make an intake for the price of all those plugs together and go faster for cheaper.

these motors are non interferrence engines..meaning the valves never contact the piston, even when the timming belt brakes..so you probobly can change cam timming
