2007 Grand Prix GXP

I have had a clunking noise since I bought my 2007 GXP, I recently looked further into it and noticed the mounting plates for my Bilsteins are loose/have movement to them. When I press the front end of the car down, the top plate that I can see has a ton of play to it and moves forward and backward.

I am wondering if anyone knows what mounting plate I need in order to replace this? I googled it and searched on here but found no part numbers or names.

I have never done any suspension work so I have no clue what I'm doing with this..

Any help would be awesome!

As far as I know the top bearing plates are the same for gxp and non gxp cars, it's just the strut itself that is different. You can go tot he local parts store and buy new strut mount bearing plates. I've run the monroe brand several times as well as the stock OEM ones.

You will need a spring compressor set or have a shop swap out the mounts for you.
 
Is this all that I need to buy? Or are there other components to replace?

If that is what you think is the noise and what you see is moving and clunking around, yes that is all you have to replace.

The plate with the rubber mount and new bearing is all that is replaced when swapping strut mounts.
 
I'll go take some photos if I can of what is going on, there is a ton of movement in the strut mount =/

It has a lot of play up, and in every direction of left/right, front/back.

Both sides but the drivers side is worse

Looks like it needs to be tightened. Large Torx bit or allen bit ( can't tell from pix) and offset box end wrench. Try that before buying parts.
 


I got a T45 star bit that fits from Autozone, but they don't have larger than a 19mm box wrench, I need like a 21 or 22mm =/

If autozone does "loan-a-tool", ask for a strut socket or 02 sensor socket. Drive that car there and make sure it fits before you go. They are OFFSET , meaning you can grab the nut without covering the Torx shaft.
 
I told the guy I was looking for an offset wrench to tighten the top strut nut but he didn't say anything helpful... I may go back tomorrow and see if I can ask about a strut socket as you said. Thank you

I bought this at Harbor Freight, but if you can get it loaned for free..... 3/8" is the ratchet drive, 22mm or 7/8" is the socket size. I used it to snug up my own struts after doing an O2 sensor.

 


Get fancy with swivel bits and extensions, it'll work.

I'd just replace the mounts, they are 10 years old and I bet they will hardly tigthen at all. The rubber is going to be all weathered and worn anyway.
