2001 Transmission question

A couple of months ago i lost 4th gear in my 2001 grand prix gt, i herd this is a common thing for these cars cause the gears are not hardened. I was reading somewhere gm started hardening the gears in the 2003 cars so what i was wondering will a 4 speed auto from a 2003 work in a 2001?

an 03 is specific to 03 only. An 04 would work. However..if you only lost 4th and want to replace only one part..in the car. It's not too bad to do it. Just takes a good amount of time.

So maybe change the forth clutch shaft and get a shift kit for it would be my best bet?

If it were mine and the only issue was no 4th, I'd lower the cradle and drivetrain a little. Pull the axle and side cover which means you drain the fluid. While draining fluid, put in a new filter and shift kit. Then pull the side cover. Do the 4th hub, which is easy if you use a picture with the notes in my pb account (Matt... insert Helpful pics/transmission, pic of bolts on trans and notes about which ones please). That would pretty much set you up.

Remove bolts 230, 231, 377, 805, 433, 434, 435, 436, 374, 379, 380, 384

Yup.. you support the body of the car. Support the drivetrain from above and pull the cradle. Then lower the drivetrain (biased to driver side if possible and then you can sneak the cover off the trans.
