2001 GTP surging / stumbling plus check engine light

Hello. My GTP has around 160k miles on it. I have owned it since 2006. I have a triple whammy going on. The check engine light came on about 2 weeks ago. I am getting a P1404 code. I tried resetting the codes but it immediately came back. A few days ago, the car has started surging while driving. I notice it mostly at speed on the highway and under light acceleration. I don't seem to notice anything under hard acceleration. Last week I also got a recall notice (15757) for a potential under hood fire.

Could the EGR code be related to the surging or do I have another issue going on with the transmission? I did a trans service around 100k.

Btw, I pulled the EGR out last night and the pintle seemed to move freely. I put the EGR back in and disconnected the battery. I cleared the code as well. About 15 minutes into my drive this AM the code came back. The car was surging still at speed and under light acceleration.

Any thoughts?

ever tune it up?

and you need a new egr, or take yours off and try to clean it. i have no egr at all. so if its stuck shut its not hurting a thing .

Yes. Wires, plugs and pcv around 100k. The EGR was replaced with an aftermarket one around the same time for the same code. No driveability issues back then though.

I installed original OEM plugs and wires. No mention of a trans problem yet. Can I rule that out at this point? If ordering a new EGR, would you go with an aftermarket one or should I get an AC Delco one this time around?

Also, when I replaced the EGR originally due to the same code, the check engine light remained on even after resetting the codes. It wasn't until I had a battery issue that it went away. Is it standard practice to disconnect the battery after replacing an EGR valve? I read somewhere that closed position is not reset until the battery is disconnected.

it could be bad wires to the egr too. inspect them for damage, cracks or bare wire.

if the engine feels like its crapping out the trannys good.

Could there be an issue with a bad throttle position sensor or IAC? I drove home tonight and after about 15 mins and I noticed the stumbling or surging behavior at cruising speed and light acceleration. The behavior is very consistent now after the car warms up. I also checked my receipts and I replaced the EGR 2 years ago. It was a Standard Motor Products EGR valve. 2 years and it is already bad???

Sounds stupid but check to ensure that you have 2 orings on the PCV valve. Had very similar symptoms and that was the cause. I was missing the bottom oring

Sounds much like an ignition problem. Check both plugs and wires. If they are good ohm ignition coils.

My pos zzp coils did this in the middle of a snow storm couple weeks ago. Reinstalled the oem coils and all was resolved. Though I did have misfire codes and not the one the op listed.

Don't go aftermarket on the EGR. I fought this battle for about 1 month until I replaced it with one from Carquest. Light went off and stayed off since last May.

Well apparently I have a trans problem. This morning I started driving to work and I felt the trans slipping. This happened roughly 2 blocks from my place. I immediately turned around and barely made it back to my place. I did not make into my garage and had to push it back into a parking spot. It does not move in any of the gears.

Btw, I called up Triple Edge Performance and they believe torque converter (including clutches) went out and the trans will most likely need to be rebuilt.

well thats the worst case possible right there.

Yeah, tell me about it. According to the conversation I had this AM with TEP, I should consider 163k a lot of mileage on an original GTP transmission.

Now I need to decide whether I want to invest that much money in this car. I am considering how much it is worth as is now vs. after it is repaired. If I fix it to keep it for a few more years what other problems are lurking?? We'll see...

i feel ya, i just installed a new tranny 120 miles ago, 1400 bucks shipped from a member here who rebuilt it. look at it this way, a new car will cost more then the tranny will. and you know this car already. unless your just ready to toss in the towel, swap the tranny.

A friend of mine just recommended a shop who has quoted $1300 to rebuild the transmission. Supposedly they normally charge $1700 and that is with a discount. I am not sure if "rebuilding" implies a standard procedure but I am guessing $1300 will just fix what's wrong vs. replacing all wearable parts. Not sure what else is done above and beyond by a dealer or a place like TEP on their rebuilt transmissions. If I go the TEP route, I am looking closer to $3000 - $3500 assuming I find a shop willing to just replace a trans if one is shipped to them.

On a side note, I would like to take on a project like this myself but it is winter time and I no longer have a garage to do repairs or the time to do them.

most of the time a trans shop will only fix it, not replace everything that would make it a full rebuild. tep you getting new everything but some reusable parts.

they got a back to basic tranny for stock set ups for like 1500 i think.

this is all thats replaced in my tranny http://www.grandprixforums.net/threads/103634-High(er)-performance-4t65e-1100-cash-OBO

be hard pressed to find a shop thats going that far. but a tep tranny would be very much like the list in this link ^^^
