2001 gp key gets stuck...

ok so heres the deal.. a buddy of mine has a 2001 gp and his key gets stuck in the ignition. im sure this isnt the first post concerning this problem, sorry for the repost, but im wondering what it could be. my ideas are like the shift lock sensor, or the ignition switch. is that correct? any other help?
 


there's a little button underneath the steering column you can push with a screw driver after you get the cap off. It'll let your key come out. Easiest way to fix it is to zip tie the button down. Mine's worked great for over a year now. If I recall correctly, three torx screws gets the lower half of the cover off.

...otherwise you replace the solenoid....
 
what solenoid would that be?

my brother has a 98 grand am wit hthe same problem and for him its the shifter tkhat needs to be replaced
 
I took my solenoid, which is white in color within the lower column area behind the wheel, removed it and cut the plunger end off and reinstalled on my '97 and never had a problem since. It is part of the interlock system, just be sure to plug it back in with this mod so no other electrical problem arrises.
 
i had the same problem on my 00 gt, when i finally got around to taking it out the thing was hot as hell. i had noticed my battery dragging since it started messing up but never connected the symptoms til then. i tore that damn thing out a couple years ago and been out since, with no problems. maybe once in two years when i was in a frantic hurry(daughter was hurt) i didnt put it all the way into park before i pulled the key out but still nothing happened...
 


nice forum guys. a simple search for existing posts on this problem and "voila" here's my fix. "push the button" works for me :)
 
Glad I just saw this.. having the same thing in my 98... key sticks.. seems to come out of I push the shifter forward hard.... thinkin its the shifter obviously but good to see i'm not the only one with this problem..
 
annnnd if you don't wanna remove it, slap a zip tie around the bottom of the solenoid ensuring that the button is pressed. that's how i have fixed my old one and my aunts :)
