2000 Pontiac Grand Prix Shutting off while driving

I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix (190k 3800) that keeps shutting off while driving. Been an on going problem. I cleaned the battery connections because they were bad but other then that i am kind of at a loss. It start right back up if you pop it in neutral and start it but tonight we had to crank it a few time and wait a few mins. After we got it started it died again within a mile but started back up right away while coasting and got us the 5 miles home. Kind of leaning towards a fuel problem. Was wondering what everyone thought and if anyone knows of any test to find out more. It just comes and goes. I just acts like you are turning the key off, no spit or sputters. Radio does not go off or skip a beat.

I already check my fuel pressure and it is running around 47 psi.
Thanks

Yea a few times the tack drops off to nothing then back up to where it is suppose to be. Kinda of gars the whole car and keeps running.

Yup, classic crank position sensor. How else would I know EXACTLY what to ask. Its an easy fix if you can pull the balancer it's right behind it.

well to be honest you really made my night been looking into many other things but nothing really fix. I need to get this fix. My wife stole my truck until her car was reliable again. She was scared as hell it would die and then not start on her way to work.

Just be sure to get it from teh dealership. This isn't one you'll want to have to do again. It's not hard to replace but takes a while to get all the crap out of the way. I think I paid like $30 for it.

I think you need to have a CASE learn done after the new one too.

Mine was bad for about 3 years before I replaced it...I was lazy...lol

was hoping to do this tomorrow. Do you think it would be better to get it from the dealer then? Also can most auto repair places do a case learn?

I dont like getting aftermarket electronics, they never seem to last for me.
If the shop has a Tech 2 type device they should be able to do it. I just use my HPtuner to do it and it only takes a minute to do. They'll just plug it in and rev the engine a few times....done.

not any yet. It happened so rarely that it will be a while to tell for sure....but nothing yet with 3 trips to town on it.

Just an FYI, I had a similar issue on my 04 grand prix where out of nowhere my car would shut off, sometimes it would start right back up, sometimes it would take a few minutes.
I had no idea what was wrong with it, until about a month later my fuel pump let go. its something to look into. when/if it happens again listen closely when you turn the car back on if your fuel pump turns on for about two seconds to prime the system, if you have a passenger in the car get them to listen by the ground in front of your passenger rear tire.

Fuel pumps are liquid cooled so if you run your car on empty alot you could be looking at premature failure. try to keep it at 1/4 tank, I know for some that's easier said then done.

^^^

yeah, i used to keep the tank on my grand am at full at all times. Then i got a grand prix and used to keep it at half, now with the way money is, i keep it at 1/4 or under lol

hey spudy my fuel pump died on my 2000 grand prix gt and i put a new 1 in and it ran for about 1o minutes and died we found out that i had a bad ground going to the fuel pump and the pump was getting hot and shuting off we tasted the ground with the multimeter and it had a draw good luck
