Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

2000 GTP shut off on its own

Car is a 2000 GTP w/ 116,000. Besides the oil leak I mentioned in recent post (which has gone away strangely) the car has been great. But today I was driving and the car shut off with no warning. I was only going like 25mph and there were no cars around but it kind of scared me frankly. Looked down, all the dash lights were on but car had shut off. As I slowed I turned the key and car started right up as if nothing happened. Made it to where I was going. I thought it might be a fuel pump going but later when I got back in the car I noticed all the trip computer stuff had gone to zero. 0.0mpg. 0 miles to empty, etc. As I drove away those numbers started to go back up to where they should be. So, the question: what happened? Obviously some kind of computer issue but what is it exactly? A power surge? The computer losing its memory? A bad ground somewhere?

Because it happened out of the blue, I'd assume you were not able too see if the tach dropped to zero befor car shut down.

If you happen to see that happen while driving then its a crank position sensor issue.

That sensor will tell the computer along with the cam sensor and others to keep giving the car fuel because its still saying the motor is spining. Once that connection is broken, as in a faulty CPS, it will cut fuel to the injectors and shut the car off.

Nope. I didn't see if the tach went to zero before the car shut off. I should have noted that the Service Engine Soon light has been on for a week now. I was thinking that it had something to do with a certain mileage being passed but maybe not. Could it have something to do with this current situation? The only thing that would be weird to me about it being a crank position sensor is: what would that have to do with the Trip information? Shouldn't the car's computer save that information? But instead, it all got zeroed out. How could it all get deleted unless it is some kind of computer problem?

I had a loose battery cable and it did this to me once. Started right back up. The next time I go to start it, I get the "click, click, click" of a dead battery. I opened the hood and checked the cables, the positive had wiggled loose from the battery.

My CPS was bad on my car. My RPMs would stop working and the abs off light would light up and on rare occasion, they car would shut off. Replaced the CPS and that fixed the problem. Car has been good ever since. Keep an eye on both of those things.. For the most part, they would both happen and have no effect on performance, the RPMs would just stay at 0. If you notice those 2, chances are you need to replace CPS.

Took car to garage this morning. Tech found problem. Cleared codes in computer first to see if light would come on again. It did. Throttle position sensor. Car also had a vacuum leak and a bad PCV. He threw a lot of codes around which I didn't write down but he said something about a reading being 14 . . . ? And it should never be above 12? Now that the TPS is replaced, the reading is at 0 which is where it should be. Like I told him, if the car was just leaking oil, I could put up with it. But I can't drive a car that stalls without warning . . . that's just dangerous. But, I'm here to tell you, TPS's aren't cheap. Oh well . . . I got the car way below what it was worth a year ago, I guess I'm paying on the back end now . . .

Once they tell me the price.. I just say can't afford it right now. Go to parts store and learn how to do it on my own....saves you TONS of money in the long run and also learning how to fix things is awesome!!!

Glad im not the only one that does that.. I kind of feel like a dick since they dont make a profit, but i cant justify paying how much they charge for simple things.

lol its as easy as unscrewing it, pulling the plug, putting new one in and plugging it back in haha

I went to Pepboys once because i needed my CPS installed and i didnt have the harmonic balancer puller tool that was needed so i figured id just let them do it. The CPS was around 20 dollars and they qouted me 190 dollars total. So they were going to charge me 170 dollars to replace it. I told them to go F themselves and found a buddy that let me borrow the tool. Some places are absolutely ridiculous.
