2000 gtp no 4th gear?

I just bought a 2000 grand prix gtp and i noticed when I'm driving it shifts just fine until 4th gear. You can hear it try to shift into it but it doesn't seem to me engaging it. The rpms don't slow down they stay at around 2500. I'm not sure what to check first!

Common problem. You need a 4th gear input shaft. The teeth in the shaft get ground down ov er the years until you lose 4th gear.
 
Not much if you do it yourself but at a garage it'll be probably around $400 or so. It won't hurt anything to drive it like that.
 
Just keep an eye on your transmission temperatures. I bought my car cheap because it had no 4th gear. My trans temps would hit 260 degrees on average. Driving up to Bill's three times the trans hit 296 degrees.
 


When mine went out, no one wanted to replace it so I ended up snatching up a junkyard trans. It's a quick and easy fix if you're comfortable working on transmissions.
