2000 grandprix gt tranny issue

Im looking to buy another grand prix and found a nice coupe w/ 13x,xxx miles for 2800...only issue is when in overdrive, it hesitates coming out of it.. I will copy/paste the add :
2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, 3.8L V-6, Automatic - 136,000 Miles

-Goodyear Eagle GT tires on 16" 5-Spoke Polished Aluminum Wheels
-Leather, power drivers seat, no tears in leather.
-Heads Up Display
-CD Player
-Cold A/C
-Dual automatic climate control
-Onboard mpg, oil life, range calculator
-Alarm
-Keyless entry
-Sunroof with shade
-Intermitent wipers
-Fog lights
-No rust
-Dual Exhaust
-Power Windows
-Very clean, almost like new
-Inspected till 2/2012

Offered for sale is a fully loaded two door GT that is very clean. Car runs and drives great and has been well maintained. Get 28mpg highway and 19 mpg average with this traction control equiped car. The four wheel independent suspendsion gives this GT a great ride, while the high performance tires hold the corners with ease. I am selling the Grand Prix because I needed a truck. The only problem is the transmission hesitates coming out of overdrive on occassion. The engine speed varies from 2K-3K rpm for a second than shifts to the correct gear. I simply give it a bit more gas and it find the correct gear with no problem. There is no slipping, nor does it make any noises, just a little slow coming out of overdrive lockup. I still drive it 50 miles to work and have even taken it for road trips to Maine with no problems. Price $2800, OBO.
...
What i am asking is, wtf is wrong with this tranny and if i do go the route of replacing it, would it be better to get a ht65-hd in there for added strength of differential (as i think the rest is the same)? thanks, and btw im new here

I don't know very much about transmissions but my 99 had almost the same problem but 10x worse... it MAY be a problem with your torque converter, the torque converter circuit, or a bad/bent/broken valve in the valve body... my advice is, take it to a local tranny repair shop. they should be able to check it out for free..

28MPG HA! Is the fluid burnt? Is the car worth the money even if it needs a trans? How low can you get him to go?

IDK if the fluid is burnt etc, ive yet to go look at the car. going to go look this weekend. I'll prolly test drive it and say i think it needs a new trans and offer 2300 cash.

if it needs a rebuilt trans i would knock the price of the trans off the top of the asking price, so maybe 1800 or 1900 would be fair. then if you can do the work your self, well you just got a car for that much cheaper.

idk, my brother (tech guy, built a HO 327 and ran it on his garage floor) said it is probally a switch as that sometimes happens to these cars. BUT if i do wind up replacing the trans, should i just go for the tripleedge tranny, i think that is built for the supercharged engine as well. so it should be able to handle a N/A engine fairly easy. Also, in the future, would this bolt in? as it is the same engine..3.8l L67 Series II Supercharged Engine w/ 4t65e-hd 110k | eBay..Honestly I would buy a gtp but insurance wants arm and leg for it =/ for some reason they rate it up at almost as much as a trans-am would cost. Just a thought, but if i could drive a "GTP" and pay for the GT insurance rate i would be pretty happy. ;] Jeeze look at my ramble ^^ Ha.

well you need to check out the fluid, take it to a shop to be looked at, if its a swtch or sensor, the seller dont need to know that, you are paying for the inspection at the shop not him, so if you can convince the guy it needs a trans so be it lol leverage man leverage.

i beat the tar out of the guy i got my car from, told him it needed 2,000 in repairs, at a shop( i wasn't lying) and fixed it all my self for 800, car went form 1800 to 800 that fast. my first offer was 600. :D

For $2800, he's probably already counting for tranny work if the car is in that good of shape. If it's always been in WV, then it's worth way more than if it was anyplace north of there. If nothing's rotted, then I'd offer $2500 and plan on $1000 for a tranny shop. If it's just a solenoid, then you're coming out ahead, in my opinion.

i'm not sure how much rust is on there, but he must be confident to take it to maine o.0 .. Im going to go look at it this weekend, will an hd tranny bolt right in? if so i friend of mine has one for 200 bucks with about 75k on it

There is really not much difference in the internals of a 4T65E-HD and a 4T65E... The only MAJOR difference is that the differential in the HD is a 3.92 not a 3.29

So yes, a HD should bolt right up to a n/a engine.

IMO 4T65E whether it being HD or not is still crap tranny, if you plan on doing major engine work soon you might as well by a nice transmission from TEP..
