2000 grand prix used engine help

I am looking for a used engine for my 2000 grand prix gt (not supercharged).

I just want to confirm if I could use a 2007 buick lucern or a 2006 grand prix 3.8 non-supercharged engine? There seem to be a lot more available, cheaper and have lower miles.

Thanks for the great forum!

What all needs to be swapped? Do I have to use my old upper intake and throttle body. Probably my old exhaust manifolds? Thanks for the advise. I am going to try and pickup the motor from the non supercharged 06 Grand Prix today.

You can either swap the upper intake and throttle body or get an adapter for the metal upper to your throttle body. If you get the Lucerne, you'll need to also change the oil filter adapter (this is an easy one gasket item).

Ok.. skip the above threads except for reference.

1. The flex plate on that 07 will be dual drilled. This means it will fit both the SC 258mm and NA 245mm torque converter patterns w/o worry.
2. To use the metal UIM you need to consider the pcv. This means you need to plumb this in between the maf and throttle plate. You can follow what was done here in the first post, http://www.grandprixforums.net/how-get-pcv-work-instead-valve-cover-breather-44478.html That brings the pcv in at the correct place on a stock 97-03 throttle body. hell..if you need one drilled/tapped I think a local has an extra TB I could snag cheap and put a fitting into for you. although you are doing a motor swap..you can likely handle the work.

If your new motor doesn't have the oil pan bracket.. get one from the dealer. It's about a $12 part and usually only a day or two. You'll love yourself for having that pan/bracket.

Thanks!

I picked up the new engine today from the 20007 grand prix non supercharged. It had the front motor mount, cool.

It looks like I will definitely need to use the old fuel injectors and fuel rail. There is no return line port on the new fuel injector rail that came with the new motor.

Looking at the two engines side by side the rear exhuast manifold looks slightly different and the EGR valve setup is different. It does look like it would bolt up however.

I have a few questions:

1. Will the 2007 Grand Prix rear exhaust manifold and complete EGR valve setup that came with the new motor work on a 2000 Grand Prix GT? Or will I have to swap the rear exhuast manifold and EGR system and piping?

2. What about the gas evap sensor? Can the new one on the aluminum intake be used or does that need to be removed or plugged and use the old one?

3. Could I use the newer fuel injector rail and injectors from the new motor and not hook up the return fuel line?

I am going to ZZP to pick up the throttle body adapter tomorrow they are local to me. Then drill and tap the throttle body for the PCV tube coming out of the aluminum intake manifold.

I want to drop the new one in tonight but had to many Beam and Coke's with my buddy that helped me pickup the new motor. Plus I would like to wait for the expert advise on the rear manifold/egr setups.

Thanks again for the advise I really appreciate it!

Glad to see you looked at them. I take a bit for granted at times. You never know if injectors/rail etc will be there.

Thanks!

It does look like it would bolt up however. change the rear manifold. the valve is just rotated to a different position for the connector? I am sure I used the 07 Lucerne one that came on my motor.

Or will I have to swap the rear exhuast manifold and EGR system and piping? You could swap the manifold with EGR, unhook from the crossover pipe and LIM. Swap the old one in place.

2. What about the gas evap sensor? Can the new one on the aluminum intake be used or does that need to be removed or plugged and use the old one? Pull the electrical back to the new sensor and hook your line to it. I did..it's working perfectly.

3. Could I use the newer fuel injector rail and injectors from the new motor and not hook up the return fuel line? No switch over to the old stuff.

I am going to ZZP to pick up the throttle body adapter tomorrow they are local to me. Then drill and tap the throttle body for the PCV tube coming out of the aluminum intake manifold. Correct

Thanks Bill!

Here is a pic of what all the EGR junk looks like on the old motor sure would be nice to get rid of all of this.

Other sensor that goes to EGR on original motor. I wonder if this car came from California having all of this emissions crap.

Thats not EGR.. that's air tubes and soleniod. You have an 02? Seems like almost all the 02's had that BS. Swap the rear, that bs and the tube that heads up front to hook to the air pump hose.

Update:

New motor is in and running great. I ended up swapping the old upper intake and rear exhaust manifold/crossover pipe/EGR setup. I took off the oil filter adapter because I was having a hard time getting the new motor to fit. (I did this project by myself probably could have stayed on there if I had someone helping me) (Note: scrape the old gasket from the block/oil filter adapter if you remove it off before you install the engine!)

Bad news:

1. Alternator did not charge. Bought a rebuild kit for $30 installed new bearings/brushes and bridge rectifier. Works great now.

2. Radiator had a small crack in the drivers side plastic tank. Replaced radiator fixed.

3. Transmission does not shift into 4th gear. Bummer splines must be stripped on 4th shaft. Deciding whether to replace or not.

4. AC does not work. Replaced low pressure switch and charged AC worked for 2 days and leaked out. Under investigation for the leak and deciding on fixing or not.

5. Rack and pinion is leaking fluid. Just a little overnight but will need to be addressed.

I bought this car as a project to learn about Grand Prix's from a guy who was going to part it out. I knew it had the spun bearing but he said that the transmission worked great. Well, it does work and shift great just no overdrive. I definately learned a lot from this experience. Trying to decide whether or not just to sell the car at this point.

Just wanted to say thanks for the above advise. I did have fun putting the motor in.

pretty sure you can change the 4 th gear hub in the car, and the rack would be a good idea to do at the same time while the cradle is off the car, the rack is just hanging there asking to be swapped out.

sounds like you got through a few hurdles, whats a few more? fix it up a bit more then sell it or keep it. you can get more if its all running right.

a/c, well you know how that can go, find the leak, try to seal it or replace what ever is leaking. shops charge a arm and a leg.
