2000 dies for no reason

2000 Grand Prix 3.8 natural.

No problems in the winter. Seems worse with heat. Just driving along, usually slowly, and it dies. However it starts right up again. Hasn't happened yet at road speed. Doesn't happen idling. No codes. He has not noticed the tach dropping to zero but he has noticed sometimes it stumbles a little, but that is a rare occurrence.

I just read another post that sounded similar and it was the crank positioning sensor. Does that sound like this? Or is there something else I should be looking at also?

I know the CPS is behind the harmonic balancer. Is that very easy to get off?

I'm doing this for a friend so I'm not familiar with this car.

Could be the issue. May be something else. It's an easy shotgun to try and fix it though.

Pull the wheel
Pop the belts
Undo the HB bolt (with air it's usually easy)
3 m6 x 1.00 x ~75mm bolts are needed to pull the balancer. They are not typically in most balancer/wheel puller kits.
Then it's held on with two 13mm's.
Reverse and hope for the best.

hey, I just had this problem and I am dealing with it right now. replaced both the CPS and HB and the stalling seemed to stop but I havent driven it much. Now I have this loud knocking noise, not sure what it is yet. CAREFUL with replacing the HB because I tapped mine in with a hammer and a wrench and i think it ruined the thrust bearing. Instead clean inside where the HB is, lube up the HB, and all I had to do was drive the nut in with the impact wrench and it straight shot drove itself back on. Goodluck

That'd be the crank you'd be tapping on.

Not a good idea.

Rotate it till it slides on the crank key.

then push lightly till it seats.

Then install the bolt and start turning.

That'll press the balancer back on.

I kinda have the same problem I just bought the car and it had a small miss so I put new plugs an wires on it an now it has a worse miss and it is throwin cps code so I guess my ? Is do they just go bad that quick, any help would b apprecated not familier with gtp always drove mustangs thanks for ur time

Its a weak magnet.

brake dust is magnetic (some) and it rests on the sensor.

Making the signal even weaker.

Thus causing issues.

You could try cleaning it first if you wanted to save money.

But since most find getting the balancer off a pain, they just replace it while they're there.
