1st gear slipping

Trans is in a 2000 gtp, 181000 miles, refreshed @ 100000 with hardened 4th shaft. The problem is when I manually shifted to 1st while doing 10-15 mph then stepped on the throttle, racing my nephews 05 gto from a roll, it slipped right up to 5000 quick. When in drive it runs fine no slipping at all. Shifts fine and all. Just a problem in manual 1st. Any ideas?

Well how then do u race from a roll? Drive or 3rd will still let it go into second, then a downshift is necessary. I just need to know what the problem may be, so I can fix it.

Mine does the same thing, when i start off from a dig in first it take a sec i feel it grab and then im off havent tried while rolling though

Put the pedal to the floor and it will shift as low as it can safely shift. If you're going 15 there should be no reason it won't go into 1st. Hell I've driven 35 and put it to the floor and it still goes into 1st.

The time it takes to shift to 1st is a lot slower than being in the gear allready. Now I am fairly new to these cars, i'm used to turbo 350-400 where there is no issue to holding it in 1st. As far as I can tell there should be an extra set of clutches or an extra band engaged while in 1st. My question is why it goes in drive but not 1st, and what could be broken. I don't need critisium on how to drive I need answers. Now if someone tells me these transmissions suck that much that you can't drive them like this why are we all chasing more speed and power.
