1999 GTP Trans Prob when Cold

I just got my 1999 GTP and it has an interesting problem when cold. When put into drive after the transmission could cool, it will move forward but any additional gas is turned into revs with none of it going to the wheels. After the revs get high enough it will pop in and then move like normal. Also, after being fully warmed up and coasting near highway speeds then going to slow down, it will clunk either when coming to a stop, at a stop, or when taking off at a green light.

I took it to a transmission mechanic who said the fluids look fine and there are no leaks. He seems to think it's the motor and transmission mounts and wants to charge me $688 to see if that's the issue.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance and sorry if this sounds stupid. I just joined the site today :)

Hi new guy..

If you want to replace your mounts, it could cost you under $150 to do every mount on the car and about an hour to two of time.

The take off issue has me thinking something is not doing well inside the trans. What kind of mileage is on the car?

The two lower ones need a jack and a block of wood along with a 15mm socket. (also removing front tires)
Upper mounts are total cake, 13mm and 15mm and it's done.

the lower mounts are easy to do. 30 minutes a side tops, you have a motor mount and a trans mount. but like BIll said it sounds like a internal trans problem.

Well that sounds a whole lot easier than the mechanic was implying with his $220 labor charge for the motor mounts lol

I was curious if it could be the valve controller based on things I looked up. What do you think?

if your trans has never been serviced and kinda been beaten on, chances are its on borrowed time. slipping and then catching never leads to a quick fix.

the lower mounts are cake tho.

heres a vid how to do the trans mount in a regal, its done the same way on a gp, parts may look a bit different, same deal for the motor mount on the other side of the car.

After some investigative work I determined that when cold the car moves independently of rpms in all gears whether drive, reverse, 3, 2, or 1.

Go to Triple Edge Performance and look under the 4t65e info problems. You probable have the same problem i do which means a rebuild or swap is coming soon in the near future. Mine has been doing this for about 6 to 7 months now as long as you dont rev the rpms up and let it bang you'll be able to get a few extra miles out of it before it breaks completely.

dont feel to bad, i lost a tranny too. and its not like i beat it to death, i just lost 3 rd gear. first to second shifted like a boss still.

being the 8 th owner, its not helping matters much. and 223,000 miles on top of all them owners.

good news is the used tranny i have now works like a champ.

i got a good deal all the way around, 300 for the used tranny with 120 on it. ( with a shift kit and hardened 4 gear hub) and 300 for the swap.

plus another 60 in fluid and filter.

most shops charge about 400 to swap, and a good used tranny can be found for 400 or less with some foot work.

craigslist part outs, the forums here in the classified ads, junk yards at least give you a warranty of some kind. good for so many days.

ive picked up a bunch of good cheap parts from part outs off craigslist.

and theres a good how to here as well if you care to do it yourself.

after watching my trans get swapped out its not as bad as you would think to get done. if need be i would do it myself next time.

Thanks! I appreciate it. Doesn't seem as bad as I was expecting to hear. That's just about as much as the shop was wanting to charge me for new engine and tranny mounts.

I smile due to insider info. Scotty got hooked up at Christmas time. Funnier part is... how long was he w/o the car?

Issues and the correct fixes are rarely what we want to hear.
