1998 Grand Prix GTP Supercharged, Clicks but won't Crank

that sounds right. try hitting the starter with a hammer a few times then crank it, if your with someone, have them turn the key and hold it while its being beat on a bit. sometimes a few good shots will make it work again, if it does work after the beating, get a new starter.

Even the hammer "fix" is totally temporary, if it even works. It wouldn't on mine. You'll have to change the starter regardless.

theres also a ignition relay that could be bad. you can swap the relays in the fuse box.

typically i try not to say go buy a new this or that with out playing with a thing or two for free to make sure your not tossing good money out the window. just shotgunning parts for no reason other then suspicion is wrong. especially when the pos battery cable has fallen off the starter.

and yes the hammer hitting, if it works is only a temp fix, thats why i said "if" it works to go buy a new starter.

and just a bit more help, 99% of the time the starter motor is just fine, its the starter solenoid that goes bad and its change able for about 30 bucks or less. way less then a new starter or even a rebuilt one. the starter solenoid is what all the wires bolt on too.

So I put in the new Battery. It tried to turn over then stopped with just the starter trying to turn. So I got my breaker bar out and turn the crank a few times for about 3 sets. Each time it tried to turn over in stopped. Know I can't even manual turn the crank. I'm thinking engine might me locked up. Would the VATS system make this happen?

oh boy. take all of the spark plugs out, try to crank it with no plugs. watch for coolant to spit out the plug holes.

its rare for a l67 to hydro lock, but a blown head gasket could fill a cylinder with coolant and lock it up.

So I got all the plugs out and still the same thing if I turn the crank manually a few times it will try to turn over then stop. After that just the starter trying to turn over

thats good. back to the starter then.

any chance you know how to jump a starter motor?

take a screw driver, wedge it between the large fat stud (where the power cable is) and one of the smaller studs on the starter, it will make a good spark then start to crank the engine over. if it cranks full speed you got a problem between the key and starter.

this vid is not your starter, but its the same way you do it.

when its in the car, its got the power to it already, so crossing the two terminals will make it turn, if the key is off, the car wont start, if it the key is to run it should fire up if it cranks full speed.

if you cant get it to crank full speed make sure its got 12 volts from the battery at the stater motor.

you checked the grounds on the trans bell housing too, right? should be the neg bat cable, and 2 thinner wires bolted to a stud on the tranny.
