1997 Grand Prix code p1811

I have a 97 GP GTP and I am getting a code 1811 max adapt and long ****. If the car is still cold it shifts good, but when the car is warm it will shift perfect from 1-3 then going into overdrive it will disengauge and the rpm gauge will jump up about 200 rpm or so then it will drop like its going to lock up but then it will hunt, I can watch the gauge search around then I can feel the car lock up eventually. If I crack throttle a bit as its dropping rpm it will lock up perfect and drive fine. All I read is Pressure Control Solenoid replacement, but I havent read many people having the problem as it shifts into overdrive and its heat dependant. Any ideas

ive had this happen to me with my first gp(97gtp) first the shift cylonoids went out it was doing what yours was.. then the car started running hot and what not cause the car wouldnt shift and drove at high rpm which lead to burning out the forward band and shredding some gears.. my solution.. new trans...

^^ No idea what he's smokin...

By adding throttle, you may be increasing pressure, which in turn then helps the shift occur. Very commonly the 1811 is a PCS. There is a possible temp fix or cheap band aid that often fixes up the 1811. It's a shift kit and adding a quart of Lucas no slip to your trans when refilling it after the shift kit induced pan drop service.

Im planning on changing the PCS this weekend, and are you suggesting to add throttle when the hunting happens, because it will lock up it if back off the throttle is what I ment.
Thanks for the responce!

Alright, my car just started throwing the dreaded 1811 code for the pressure control solenoid on the tranny, as of last night. So....best place to get the part? I am also going to check the wiring harness on the car to make sure there isn't a short etc. some where. I have also read that a sift kit install is also a bandaid measure for this.
So shift kit plus pcs replacement should equal no more tranny issues for a while?

Sorry for jacking your thread Boost!

A shift kit and a bottle of Lucas No slip is what a lot of guys do with great results, mainly because they don't want to replace the soleniod.

Replacing the soleniod..you'd be great. Adding a shift kit..you'd enjoy the trans even more.

How long can I safely drive the car with the pcs going out? It might take about two weeks before I can gather all the parts and take care of the problem.

Can't answer that for you. I'm sure some have driven that long, others longer and some maybe had trouble before that. Basically though the car is going to command maz pressure shifts to try and get around the pressure issue.

my trans didn't last to long with a bad pcs. maybe a month till 3 rd gear left for good. end result was a used trans swap.

Well I have no idea how long the transmission has been doing this, bought it last week off of a guy. So I have ordered the transmission rebuild kit, made sure I had all of solenoids, trans cooler and shift kit from zzperformance. Including Dex 8. Now I am hunting for metal gaskets for the engine and looking for exhaust manifolds. I have a small oil leak around the exhaust manifold so I figured what heck I am going to have it torn apart this weekend anyway might as well go through the transmission with a fine tooth comb and take care of the leak. Ugh. So hopefully I will have the car back on the road in a week or two.

I installed my pcs a few weeks about and have been driving the car daily, its like a brand new trans, it was so easy to do and the result was almost unreal.

i was looking on ebay, find your part # and search it, i found a whole set off 3 sensors and what ever else you should change for about 100 bucks, its getting to the sensors thats hard. there are a few vids on you tube that show pretty good where and how to get to it, the best vid i found was of a GP too.

I got my solenoid from rockauto for about 45
bucks and I lowered the cradle and took of the side cover and
there found the solenoid removed the clip put the new sensor in put the cover back on changed the oil and filter and jt
drives like brand new
