1996 Grand Prix - KEY STUCK IN IGNITION

1996GP

New member
Hello:

I have a '96 Grand Prix with the key stuck in the ignition. I've searched / read dozens of posts but they were for '97 and up models with the access port under the column.
This car doesn't have the oval access port, so there's no way to push/reset the lock cylinder switch.

Anyone know what might be causing the key to be stuck? Thanks in advance!

is the battery dead?

could be a busted wire in the console to the shiftier, or the lock its self is messed up, has it been sticky feeling?

The battery is fully charged and the key moves freely. I will check the wiring and report back. Thanks.

My sons car did that turn it of and off a few times and make sure it is in park all the the way and the key will come out

Success! It was the shifter knob. Specifically, there's a rubber cover over the part which you squeeze first before moving the shifter. That rubber cover moved and jammed the guts inside of the knob.
So, the lever was not being depressed far enough. I moved the rubber cover to the proper position and now the key is easily removed. Thanks again.
