180 T-Stat

Who is this guy?
When I flushed my coolant awhile back, I was looking at thermostats. I found a 180 degree one, rather than the stock 195 degree one. I think it was on ZZP's website, and it said that the lower temperatures could cause the engine to do unnecessary things, like use more fuel than it needs. My car isn't tuned, but can I put in a 180 degree thermostat with no problems? What do you exactly gain out of a colder thermostat?

No, won't gain you anything. The stock fan turn-on points are still in the 212 range. Unless you're tuned for it just stick a new 195 in it, bleed the air out of the system and call it good.

If you plan to get a tune at some later point, it won't hurt to toss it in, then when the fan turn on points are changed you'll be good to go. Won't hurt having it in untuned, just won't help either.

i put a tuned pcm in and left the 195 tstat in. my temps have yet to ever reach 195 even when idling and it's 95 degrees outside.

^ yeah because your fans are running on high all the time. And the tstat probably never opens. Not the best idea......

hes fine, im running the same set up. fans tuned to 180 and a 195 t stat, i run 195 moving and will hit 200 and a tad but more in the heat if left idling.

Gonna get a lot of hate here, but what does a tuned PCM do? I know it's the computer in your car or something (I think), but why do people buy tuned ones? Again, hate all you want.

He just said it doesn't get to 195.....so it's not opening. Im well aware 3800s take abuse well. But that is just sophomoric to run it that way. But....your car.

tuned means the pcm has been changed in one way or another. you need a tuner program to do any of it. dhp or hpt.

you can change all sorts of stuff from tranny settings to the engine fans to injectors, mafs, and delete codes.

your thinking wrong, its working perfectly, or he'd be over heating big time. see my point?

So what's one thing you can change using a tuning a PCM that will gain HP? Like changing fuel ratio or something? I assume people use them to account for all the mods they do so their car doesn't blow up?

you cant really make more hp out of the pcm, but get your engine running the best it can. i just stole a zzp PE tune and put it in my car, that woke it up for sure. the trans tune also wakes the car up some.

then you can try to fight off any kr with maf tuning. your eyes will bleed reading and trying to learn all this crap.

Lol. Scotty. Ive always liked you on here. But if his temp isn't ever getting to 195. Then the tstat isn't opening. That's how they work.....Now if it's stuck open and flowing full coolant that's the only way it isn't over hearing.

they only open for a minute or less. once the cooler coolant hits it it shuts again. and over and over it goes.

now if you have a 180 in there it will stay open all the time and not regulate the temps. like i said if it never opened he would be over heating, not running cool. if it was stuck open, it would also run hotter then it is now.

If it is stuck open you will not run hotter. You will run cool. And will take much longer to get to operating temp. But it doesn't matter. I prefer to not half ass doing things like that. But to each his own.

i'm already running cool so why put the 180 in ? if i put the 180 in and the coolant never stops circulating then the fans would never have a chance to cool the coolant down in the radiator .

in the winter it would run cold. but in the summer time in peak heat it will run warmer on long drives, or in traffic. not saying it will over heat, but the temps are not being regulated at all. and the coolant just keeps pumping round and the rad never really cools its load of coolant.

like i said before, his car is fine, his t stat clearly works right.
