160 T-Stat

Just bought an 05 GTP, put in a 160 degree thermostat and when driving, the temp gauge looks right, when sitting at idle the gauge goes up to where it sits at when I had the stock 195 in it. Is that normal? Is it reading right? Thanks for any help guys.

why do you have a 160* in?

are you tuned for a lower thermostat? if not, that is why and it's also why you're gonna throw a code.

My 180 will sit a tad over the 1/4 mark while driving, but when sitting in traffic on a hot day it will hit half way and sometimes about 5/8's up and then the fan kicks on. The only thing the t-stat is doing is opening up earlier when the coolant is cooler, it will only keep the car cooler when more air is going through the radiator. To keep the car cool on hot days in traffic you would really need a larger radiator, that's the real upgrade to a cooling system, not a t-stat. If you got a larger radiator i would definitely get a hotter t-stat in there.

The fans are still turning on at the stock setpoint. The fans do not know that you put in a 160F stat.

Put the 195F back or get a 180F and a tune.

160 thermostat seems too low, you'd need to have quite a few supporting mods and PCM tune. I used to have a 180 thermostat but no pcm tune or other mods and it made my car run too rich because it ran too cold and I also the needle kept jumping up and down when driving. I have since then put a stock 195 degree thermostat since my car is stock and my temperature is steady, doesn't overheat and the fuel burns up like it needs to.

160* is too low for everyone.

hell, i wouldnt even put a 180* thermostat in my car unless i was trying to run lots of boost non-intercooled. it is way too cold and you should really just go back to stock. you do not need a cooler thermostat. if you dont know why, then please google your heart out and figure out why its a bad idea for you.
