The 2001 GTP wouldn't start. The electrical system appears to be completely dead, but the battery is at 12.6V. When I probed the large positive wire on top of the fuse box behind the battery it reads 5V, but the reading is unstable. I haven't been able to find the schematic in the manual yet, but I'm guessing something between the battery cable and the fuse box has failed.
 


update: looks like the smaller black cable from the battery to the underhood fuse box is rotted and intermittent. Can I buy a new cable assembly anywhere?
 


Napa used to sell battery cables that are pre made in various length for both positive and negative, perhaps they still do.

I'd check there or at another parts store before buying a new cable from GM, if that is still an option. Even it I couldn't do that I would just make my own cable for like $20. Bulk wire from napa and new cable terminal ends are cheap.

Your in California I'm in Oregon cars here arnt all rotted out.. beat to crap yes but not rotted. Same where you live wires are typically in good condition since W-body's fill the yard.

No figuring required just go find a good one and take it home.

Or order it online wait for it to come. Or go by the parts and remake them to length.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the money saving tips and I know these cars aren't worth a lot anymore. My son has been driving the car for a year, it will be 5 more years before he finishes college and can buy himself a better car. This GTP needs to last a while longer.

It doesn't burn oil, runs strong and has had regular transmission fluid changes it's whole life. We already rebuilt and FE5'd the suspension, fixed the supercharger drive, belts, water pump, radiator, MAF, brakes and a few other things. I'm OK with paying more for an OEM cable if it fits correctly and stays reliable while he's on his own focusing on school.
